THURSDAY, APRIL 19
WILLOW CREEK COUNTRY CLUB

Willow Creek Country Club

Willow Green is a super private course and receives accolades from everyone who plays. If you failed to sign-up, don't despair, a few openings remain.

This is a well-designed course that can be both fun and difficult to play. The greens are kept in excellent condition, and a lake and stream come into play on several of the holes.

LOCAL BOY MAKES GOOD IN SENIOR AMATEUR TOUR AT PINEWOOD CC EVENT

Asheboro, NC

(April 12, 2012)

Joe Prairie of Asheboro didn't have to leave town to compete in the Senior Amateur Golf Tour event held at Pinewood Country Club. He obviously arrived well-rested and ready to go as his 73 in the A Flight was the lowest score posted in the entire event. He was 4 strokes clear of a trio of golfers: Richard Gant and Jim Rohr of Pinehurst and Reidsville's Tim Stone.

Prairie's score was part of an unusual trend today - in every flight the winner's scores were impressively low, while overall scores were higher than normal. "The greens will be running over 11 on the Stimpmeter", said Pinewood's Head Golf Pro Chad Newton. If you were above the hole it was a challenge to get down in two.

In the Championship Flight, hole #1 was awfully good to Chuck Latham of Vass. Because of the shotgun start, Latham played the hole as his final hole of regulation play in the event. He ran in a 90 foot birdie putt to give him a 76 and tie him for 1st place in the flight with Burlington's Craig Cathey. Every 1st place tie "on-Tour" goes to a sudden death playoff, which Latham won on the very same Hole #1.

James Herndon of Hamlet was the only B Flight player to break 80 with a 78 for a 3-stroke margin of victory over Pinehurst's John Henely. Both John and James were looking for their 1st wins of the season. "James has been 'on-Tour' with us for a long time and has enjoyed great success in the past. It looks like he may be returning to his winning ways. Meanwhile John has 'cashed' in 2 in a row and is due to 'break through' with a win soon", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck.

Youngsville's Jerry Snead edged Greensboro's Charles Gunn by a single stroke in the C Flight competition - 88 to 89. "When only 2 guys break 90 in the Flight, and by the slimmest of margins, you know the flight is fairly handicapped" noted Hallenbeck.

How to beat a [very] BAD economy

If you are tired of dealing with the current state of the
economy, here's something you should know:

The surest path to success isn't in learning how to navigate through a terrible economy. The smarter path is to discover how you can "create your OWN economy..." where YOU make the rules!

What isn't so obvious, is that you don't have to settle for
the mess you see out in this economy.

There IS an alternative.

And this
new video reveals what that is.

Now I have to warn you, at the end of this video is an oddtwist unlike anything you've probably seen before.

If you do nothing else today, be sure you watch through to the end.

It's clear that the guy in the video is on a mission.

And from his previous record of successes, it seems like he is pretty much on target.

Watch the video here.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be  a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve.  So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?   Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week.  You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.   There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Question from week #140

Concerning removing a ball from play because it is unfit for play (R5-3), select the correct statements:

1. If my ball is visibly cut or cracked or no longer round, I may take it out of play during the play of a hole.

2. My ball hit the cart path on the fly and now has a visible scrape of the surface of the ball that has roughed up and discolored the finish. I am allowed to take it out of play during the play of a hole.

3. My ball has hit the 150 yard marker on the fly and has a nickel-sized paint mark on it. I am allowed to take it out of play during the play of a hole.

4.I may always remove and replace with a different ball once my ball is on the putting green.

Answer

Rule 5-3 has very specific language. In part, R5-3 reads:

A ball is unfit for play if it is visibly cut, cracked or out of shape. A ball is not unfit for play solely because mud or other materials adhere to it, its surface is scratched or scraped or its paint is damaged or discolored.

Answer 1 is the only correct answer.

The modern golf ball is very hard to damage with a golf club or by contact with trees, cart paths or other solid objects. In recent years the only time I can recall an incident where Rule 5-3 applied concerned a ball that was hit from the tee then subsequently run over by a mower cutting the rough.

The rotary action of a mower blade sliced a small cap off the ball. There are two penalties associated with Rule 5-3. If you fail to follow the procedure for lifting and examining a ball for suspected damage or if you lift a ball without sufficient reason the player is penalized one stroke.

If you substitute a ball during the play of a hole when not permitted by the Rules, it is loss-of-hole penalty in match play or two strokes in stroke play.

Playing the hole with one ball, then putting with another is never permitted.

Tour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses:  If the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather.  (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office.  The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.

Bruce
