TOBBACO ROAD

Described as "Pine Valley on steroids" and "golf's rock and roll thrill ride", if you have never played it before or if you have, you will say afterward, Tobacco Road Golf Club is certainly unique.

In summary, Tobacco Road is one of those courses that you will either love or hate as it challenges you mentally and will penalize you severely for not executing a high risk shot.

Carving his way through an old sand quarry, Mike Strantz created one of the most celebrated and talked about courses in the world. Consistently rated amongst the nation's best, Tobacco Road is the one course that if you have not played it before will leave you begging for more. The scene is so breath-taking you will want to bring along your camera to forever capture the greatness of "The Road". However, I wouldn't recommend a selfie on Thursday unless it's after you hole-out on your last hole.

Playing at a length of 6500 yards from the Ripper or back tees, Tobacco Road was rated as high as second in slope in the Carolinas to the famed Ocean Course at Kiawah Island. The course was designed by Mike Strantz and he is one of those names you may not know but after Tobacco Road, You will have gotten your education of a guy who was extremely creative and got his early training with Tom Fazio.

Here's a secret - there's more landing area than appears so don't let this course get in your head as there are many people who travel to North Carolina just to play Tobacco Road and many have shot career low rounds here.

Some of the The Road awards and accolades:

Awards and Accolades

  • Top 100 Public Courses in America - Golf Digest Sept. 2009
  • Top 100 "Places to Play" in America - Golf Magazine Aug. 2010
  • 2008 NGCOA Course of the Year in North Carolina
  • Top 10 Upscale Places You Can Play by Golfweek
  • Best New Course in North Carolina by Golf Magazine
  • #4 Public Course in America - GolfWorld Magazine Sept. 2010
  • 4.5 Star rating by Golf Digest's Best Places to Play Guide

Tobacco Road Ranked Top 50 in the World by Golf Course Architecture Magazine -

Mike Strantz

In 1993, Mike was asked to design a small golf course on Pawley's Island, SC. Caledonia Golf and Fish Club was a success, and Mike knew he had found the perfect job. This course has been deemed a "must play" and has also been ranked 85th in the top 100 courses by Golf Magazine.

His next major projects were Stonehouse and Royal New Kent in Virginia, ranked 14th and 23rd respectively, in the top 100.

Another feather in his cap is the sister course to Caledonia, called True Blue. Located in Myrtle Beach, True Blue has been dubbed the "Pine Valley of the South."

After completing Tobacco Road, Mike created Tot Hill, a stunning gem at the base of the Uwharrie Mountains in Asheboro, NC.

From North Carolina back to South Carolina, Mike created his first private club in Bulls Bay Golf Club. Located in the heart of Charleston, Bulls Bay combines Mike's creative flair with the South Carolina lowcountry.

His final projects included renovations at Silver Creek Valley Country Club in San Diego, CA and a complete course re-design at Monterey Peninsula Country Club located on 17 mile drive in beautiful Monterey, CA.

Mike was awarded the "1998 Architect of the Year" by Golf World Magazine. Fellow architects and critics have referred to Mike's courses in terms of "sensory overload" and having, "drop-dead signature holes."

So how does Tobacco Road stack up against his other famous designs? Simply put, "It's the best project I've worked on," says Strantz.

In 2005 Mike Strantz lost his three year battle with cancer.

REMINDER - YOUR NEW TOUR NAME

CENTRAL CAROLINA TOUR

The Triad and Raleigh/Pinehurst Senior Amateur Golf Tours for 2015 has a new Tour name.

As all Tour "veterans" are aware, in the past the Triad and Raleigh/Pinehurst Tour schedules have been identical.

Beginning on the 2015 schedule, the two tours will be merged to form a newly named Tour: The Central Carolina Tour.

By taking this step we will avoid any confusion as to where you may have finished overall in a certain event because all competitors will be listed together for each tournament on the website. While this will result in having only one Points Standings listing, the prize pool and everything else will remain the same.

Sign-up for the 2015 season is only $90.00.

We look forward to another very successful year with excellent courses (many of them private) and first rate competition.

As always,to register and to sign-up to play or if you have any questions, or need any assistance, please call me at 336-495-6556, or email me at behgolf@aol.com.

"Improve your golf mental toughness 10-fold"

Every golfer has heard the saying "It's all in your head" or "Golf is 90% mental" or "Golf is the most mentally demanding sport in the world." Yet what do golfers do about it? Well, most often absolutley nothing! Not necessarily because they don't want to, but sometimes golfers actually think the mental game doesn't matter to them!

Click Here to Unlock Your Mind and Shoot Better Golf

EVERY golfer can benefit from increasing their mental toughness and harnessing the full power of thier mind!

Many golfers naively get stuck into thinking that the mental game only matters for elite players or pros who make a living golfing. Nonsense! EVERY golfer needs to use their mind properly.

  • It is your mind that determines how well you learn when taking lessons. (and this training course is packed with accelerated learning techniques that will have you absorbing more from lessons)

  • It is your mind that will allow you to set up to the ball correctly and commit to your swing (or not!).

  • It is your mind that will either stay focused under pressure and get you to make a smooth, fluid stroke when you need to drain an 8 footer for the win, or have you choking like a dog and collapsing like a house of cards when the heat is on!

2 CAREER ROUNDS HIGHLIGHT SENIOR TOUR EVENT

Clayton, NC
(March 12, 2015

Two veteran Senior Amateur Golf Tour members turned in their best Rounds ever in Tour competition today at The Neuse Golf Club. In this, the "Kick-Off" event of the 2015 regular Tour schedule, Ron Brady of McLeansville and Fayetteville's Mike Wallace both posted impressive scores in windy conditions to grab top honors in their respective flights.

While Brady had tasted victory on two previous occasions "on-Tour", neither matched the satisfaction level of today's event. "This is my best round in tournament play anywhere", stated Brady. "It felt real good the whole day. You wish it would be like this every time out". Brady's even-par round of 72 in the A Flight was highlighted by 3 birdies and some nice par saves. He finished 6 strokes ahead of both Raleigh's Rick LaFata and Madison's Wilson Shelton.

The B Flight belonged to Fayetteville's Wallace who garnered his first Tour win in the event with an 82. He finished 1 shot ahead of Graham's Lewis Herndon.

Wallace blitzed the front side with a 35 and managed to hold on for the win despite a 3-putt on his final hole.

Up to that point his putting was "spot-on" according to Wallace. "I made 3 putts of at least 18 feet and put everything else close to the hole. It's great to win one".

It took an extra hole to determine the winner of the C Flight as Durham's Brian Costine and Walnut Cove's Bobby Hutchison finished regulation play with identical 89s. Unfortunately for Hutchison, his first tee shot of the playoff was wayward, winding up out of bounds and essentially giving the playoff to Costine.

An individual highlight of the C Flight competition belonged to Tour rookie Rick Brewer. After reeling off a string of triple bogies, Brewer hit a driver and 3-hybred on to the 480 yard, par 5, 8th hole and calmly dropped the putt for an eagle 3!

The Championship Flight saw Whispering Pines' Ron
Hockensmith earn a 3-shot win over Cary's Johnny Adams with a 76.

Where Will You Be in the 2015 Season Ending Point Standings Race?

There are only two ways to get to the year ending National Tournament - win one of the four majors or be one of the Top 15 point earners in your flight.

As you plot your tour schedule, be cognizant of the fact, only the top 15 are guaranteed access. Usually, most flight races are tight and depends on how well you play and of course how many tour dates you participate in during 2015.

Do you know how many tournaments you will need to play and what place you will need to finish in each tournament to ensure you have your automatic invitation?

Rules Review

It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?

Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.

I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.

There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

Question from #294

Jon hit his tee ball which he caught on the bottom edge of his driver. The ball raced forward about three inches off the ground, struck the tee marker of a forward teeing ground, popped 80 feet in the air and landed back at Jon’s feet where it lay embedded in the ground, inside the teeing ground—hilariously entertaining for Jon’s buddies.

Decide which following statement is correct:

A. Rule 25-2, Embedded Ball, states the player is entitled to relief for a ball embedded in its own pitch mark, in any “closely mown area” through the green. However, the Definition of through the green does not include the teeing ground of the hole being played. For that reason he either plays the ball as it lies or must deem it unplayable.

B. Penalty-free relief for this situation is available only if the Local Rule for Embedded Ball Through the Green is in effect.

C. In equity, Jon is entitled to penalty-free relief and because the ball lies on the teeing ground, he may “tee” the ball for his second stroke.

D. If Jon re-tees and plays the ball, that stroke will be his third.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Answer

D is the only correct statement.

When Jon made his initial stroke his ball was in play. Yes, the teeing ground of the hole being played, by definition, is not included as a part of the area deemed through the green, but this is for reasons other than applying relief under R25-2. The Rules really do not contemplate such a situation as this; and as a result, in equity, Jon’s ball embedded in the teeing ground would be eligible for embedded ball relief relief (see D25-2/8). Jon could lift and clean the ball.

What’s more, because his ball is on the teeing ground, Jon may also repair the damage made by his ball impact before dropping. (see Decision 13-2/2) It is important to point out that normally, Jon would be prohibited from first repairing the ball impact before dropping. This is an exception afforded under R13-2. Like I said, a unique situation that is best described as residing tucked in to a corner of the Rules envelope.

Jon’s ball is in play. He should simply take the relief drop and play on from there. Jon must not re-tee the ball as that would be interpreted by the Rules as electing to play under stroke and distance, thus making answer D correct.

TTour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
