Joey Moffitt of High Point, playing in the Championship flight scorched Forest Oaks CC with six birdies to shoot 35-35-70 on the par 72 layout Thursday. Tom Fagerli of Yadkinville did his best to keep pace with Moffitt with three birdies of his own while shooting a one under par 35 on the back nine and a total of 73 to finish second. The A flight also produced some low scores as Brad Rinella of Jonesborough, TN and Wilson Shelton of Madison tied at even par 72 and had to go back out for a sudden death playoff to decide a winner. After tying the first three holes with a bogey and two pars, Rinella finished the battle by sinking a birdie putt on the fourth hole that Shelton was unable to match. The win was the second of the season for Rinella. Ben Wheaton of Southern Pines carded 37-37-74 for a third place finish. Four golfers posted 75. Jack Stanley of Summerfield, Mike Johnson of Clayton, Cecil Lockley of Creedmoor, and Tom Carbone of Charlotte.

It was Richard’s first win of 2017 as he gobbled up the extra points for winning the third major. Jim Prouty and Marty Young, both of Pittsboro ended in a two-way tie for second place with 81’s.
