Lonnie Poole Tournament

10:00 AM Shotgun

The Lonnie Poole Golf Course is the course of NC State University.

The layout has been designed by Arnold Palmer and the design team at Arnold Palmer Design Company (including Erik Larsen and Brandon Johnson, both NC State graduates). With breathtaking views of the Raleigh skyline and the award winning Centennial Campus, the golf course has become a favorite in the golf community.

As you can imagine, if you played other golf designs of Arnold Palmer, expect your share of risk rewards decisions on just about every tee shot and your approach to the green.  Execute all shots exactly and low scores are to had.....miss the vision and you will have a chance for par or worse.

The course has hoted many collegiate tournaments, is very playable for all tour members skill levels and will be a good challenge to Championship and A Flight members.

NC State is one of the premier universities in turfgrass in the world and facilitates turfgrass and storm water research associated with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the course offers flatland, wet lands and trees to navigate during your round.

Expect your savvy peers to have already signed-up. You know the drill - to get withl Bruce Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556 or email him at behgolf@aol.com

THE SENIOR AMATEUR GOLF TOUR

BRYAN PARK 2 - DAY TOURNAMENT REVIEW

TOP FIVE SCORES BY FLIGHT

===============================================================

BRADY BEATS NATIONAL CHAMP IN SENIOR TOUR PLAYOFF

Browns Summit, NC

June 11, 2015

McLeansville's Ron Brady locked horns with Tom Carbone - last year's National A Flight Champion, from Charlotte in the annual 2-day Senior Amateur Golf Tour event at Bryan Park. Each fired identical 73s on both days of competition, taking on the Champions Course on Wednesday and the Players Course today.

As is the case with all first place ties on the Senior Am Tour, the Championship would be decided over extra holes.

On the very first playoff hole, with Brady safely in for a par, Carbone needed to drop a 6 footer to extend the playoff another hole. It didn't happen. "I can't believe he missed it", said Brady. "He had been making them all day. He pushed me the whole way".

Scott Fink had a much easier time of things in taking the B Flight crown as the only player in the flight to break 80 both days of the event, with a 79 - 76 - 155 for a 7 shot win over his closest competitor, Tom Kubla of Pinehurst. Fink's scores over the 2 day event moved his Tour handicap into A Flight range, where he will compete "on-Tour" going forward.

In the Championship Flight, High Point's Kim Mansfield made his 2015 Tour debut a successful one by grabbing the win. After opening the first day with a 1-under 71, he held on to that lead by following it with a 77 - 148. Winston-Salem's Howard Nemenz closed hard with a final day 73 that left him 1 shot off Mansfield's effort.

The C Flight belonged to another Winston-Salem member as Buck Payne closed with an 81 on day 2. His 168 two-day score edged Randleman's Fred Dodge by 2 strokes for the win.

Next up for the Senior Tour is Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh on June 18. There are still openings available for the North Carolina State University course.

Where Will You Be in the 2015 Season Ending Point Standings Race?

There are only two ways to get to  the year ending National Tournament - win one of the four majors or be one of the Top 15 point earners in your flight.

As you plot your tour schedule, be cognizant of the fact, only the top 15 are guaranteed access.  Usually, most flight races are tight and depends on how well you play and of course how many tour dates you participate in during 2015.

Do you know how many tournaments you will need to play and what place you will need to finish in each tournament to ensure you have your automatic invitation?

Rules Review

It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?

Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.

I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.

There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

Question from week #308

Brian and Ryan are head-to-head in a match. After six holes Ryan is 1 up. While playing the seventh hole, Ryan’s tee ball has come to rest in a three inch deep crevice just off the fairway. The ground has apparently been eroded from underneath due to a broken buried drainage pipe that caused the damage probably due to recent heavy rains. Ryan thinks this should be GUR.

Brian disagrees and he points out that the ground on the course is constantly undergoing minor shaping by the elements and Ryan has no choice but to deal with the ball as it lies. Ryan states he will play two balls and let the Committee decide and Brian agrees. Ryan further states he wants the second ball to count for score if permitted by the Rules.

With his original ball, he deems it unplayable, takes correct relief and makes 5 on the hole. With the second ball he takes procedurally correct free relief from the area he thinks is GUR and makes 4 on the hole. Brian makes 5 on the hole.

While playing the 8th hole, they bump into a member of the Committee, describe the situation from the previous hole and ask for a ruling as to the status of the match.

The correct status of the match is:

A. The match is all square.
B. Ryan is 1 up
C. Ryan is 2 up.
D. Brian is deemed the victor in the match as Ryan is DQed.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Answer

B. Ryan remains 1 up, the previous hole was halved with each player making 5. This is match play. If there is a doubtful situation, the sides in the match must either resolve the situation to their mutual satisfaction or acknowledge that a dispute as to the outcome of the hole exists and then report to the Committee to resolve the situation. With his original ball, Ryan deemed it unplayable, incurred a 1-stroke penalty and made five, as did Brian so the hole was halved. Play of a second ball, as described in R3-3, only applies to stroke play, never to match play.

In match play, this incorrectly played second ball would normally be deemed a “wrong ball” and Ryan would have lost the hole if Brain had made a timely claim. But Brian made no such claim by the time they teed off on the 8th hole, thus this second ball is immaterial to the outcome of this match.

It is up to the sides in a match to either agree on a proper way to resolve a dispute, or, if they cannot, have the Committee rule. The outcome would have been different had Ryan proceeded as if his situation would be ruled as GUR by the Committee, taken the proper relief and made four.

Then when the sides presented the situation to a member of the Committee, if the Committee happen to rule in Ryan’s favor, he would have won the hole and been two up. If they ruled it was not GUR, then Ryan would have lost the hole for playing from a wrong place and the match would have been all square.

TTour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses:  If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather.  (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office.  The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
