Nice weather prevailed at Greensboro CC for the Senior Tour today. In the Champ flight Craig Sturdivant of Sanford went low and shot a nice one under par 71 to take 1st place. Ron Hockensmith of Pinehurst was close behind with 73 to finish in 2nd. Steve Lassiter also from Pinehurst shot 75, Bill Long of Southern Pines posted 76, and Tom Fagerli of Yadkinville carded 77 to round out the top five.
In the A flight. Chuck Smith of Sanford and Gerald Lewis of Greensboro each shot 76 which required a playoff which Chuck won on the first hole for the win. Bill Berry of Garner narrowly missed being in the playoff with a score of 77. Rob Geilhausen of Linwood and Cecil Lockley of Creedmoor both posted 78 to tie for 4th. Jim Alford of Zebulon finished alone in 6th shooting 79 in his first tournament of the 2018 season.
In the B flight. Magic 71 appeared again as Ron Tapscott of Walkertown posted the one under par 71 carding an eagle and 4 birdies along the way for the win. It was Ron’s lowest score in the last several years on tour. Another popular score today was 79 as 4 players in the B flight shot the identical score. Newcomer Zeb Lewis of Clemmons shot one of the 79’s. While tour veterans Jerry Thorne of Greensboro, Dexter Barbee of Burlington, and Gus Alford of Zebulon also posted 79 as all finished in a tie for 2nd.
In the C flight. Lewis Burgman of Greensboro came out swinging shooting 42-41-83 for his first win of the season. Don Michaux of Greensboro was only one back of friend Lewis posting 84 for one of his better rounds to date to finish second. Brett Simon of Kernersville posted 88 to take the 3rd place prize home with him. It was a crowded field sitting on 89 and a fourth place tie. The four players posting 89 were Mike Robinson of Greensboro, Charlie Snipes of Richmond VA, Bobby Hutchison of Walnut Cove, and Dwight Davis of Pittsboro.
