Seven Lakes Has New Owners and a Great Course is Improved!
Golf industry veterans Jon Whittemore and Larry Galloway used to work for ClubCorp and spend time at Pinehurst Resort on company business. “Naturally, we had a chance to get to know the area,” Whittemore said. Now, after purchasing Seven Lakes Country Club for just over $1 million, they have become initimately familiar with the local golf market. “It’s kind of a dream come true to own a golf course in one of the meccas of golf,” Whittemore said. “It’s a spectacular golf course that has all the bones you would want to compete in this destination market and against other destination markets.” Whittemore and Galloway, who owned a combined four other courses in Texas and Florida, plan to spend $200,000 on capital improvements at Seven Lakes this year. “That includes renovating the cart paths, modernizing the clubhouse, and a new fleet of golf carts this spring,” Whittemore said. “Expansion of the greens is another project we have in mind, but that will not likely occur until the fall.”

3 GO LOW IN SENIOR EVENT

Mild temperatures and an immaculate golf course greeted 108 Senior Amateur Golf Tour members at Greensboro Country Club - The Carlson Farms Course - as scores went low for the top finishers. Three golfers posted season low scores to secure victories. Two of the three scores equaled career lows for a pair of Tour veterans.
In the A Flight John East of Rockingham vanquished the competition with a 69 that was 5 shots clear of his nearest pursuer, Raleigh's Mike Peters. East was a model of consistency, posting only 1 bogey to go along with his 4 birdies. "John has been 'on-Tour' for a long time", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "He had medical problems with his vision in the last year, but it sure looked like he had no problems reading his putts today. Great to see him come back like this".
Donald Brown of Kernersville bettered his season low score by 7 strokes in the C Flight with a 79. The only problem was that Tour newcomer Jim Wilson, also of Kernersville, equaled that score in his first Tour outing. Not to be deterred, Brown managed to secure the win with a sudden-death playoff victory on their first extra hole.
Dick Schuler of Pittsboro has been a force in the B Flight all season long. He continued his string of strong events with a 76 for his 3rd win of the 2015 season. Unlike East and Brown, he just managed to equal his season-low score. It was important that he did as his margin of victory over runner-up Ron Gburek of Lewisville, last week's winner, was a single stroke.
Cary's Johnny Adams moved into 2nd place on the season-long Championship Flight Points Standings race with a 73 that was 1 shot clear of Winston-Salem's Howard Nemenz who currently holds 3rd place on that list. The competition was tight in the Championship Flight as 6 players were within 3 shots of the lead.
Next up for the Senior Tour is Seven Lakes Country Club in the Pinehurst area. There are spots open for that event. Any amateur golfer over 50 can contact Hallenbeck for entry into that event.

Question from week #316
Tom Kubla is playing in a regional stroke play event. On the 4th hole of the first day, playing the River Course, he hits his drive off line to the right. He feels he should have little trouble finding the ball, thus no provisional. About three minutes into the search period for his ball, Tom realizes it may be lost, so he jumps in his cart and races back to the tee to play a “provisional” ball, while his fellow competitors continue the search. During his journey back to the tee, a ball is found that his fellow competitors feel is Tom’s original ball. His fellow competitors try in vain but fail to get his attention. Not until after he has re-hit from the tee and arrived back in the area does he learn a ball was found. He positively identifies this ball as his. Since it was found by a fellow competitor within the permitted five minute search period, Tom continues play of the hole with his original ball, carding a 4 on the hole. Upon completion of the round, before turning in his score card, Tom relays the events of the fourth hole. How should the Committee rule?
A. No problem. Tom was trying to save time, returning quickly to hit a provisional ball while his fellow competitor’s continued with the search.
B. Though, technically, Tom could not return to the tee to hit a “provisional ball”, as he had already left the immediate area of the teeing ground, in this case it is not an issue since his original ball was found before he teed off a second time and before the five minutes expired. The proper interpretation of the Rules in this case would give Tom enough time to return and identify the found ball.
C. Tom didn’t identify his ball within five minutes of beginning his search, so by the definition, it was lost. He should have continued play of the hole with his “provisional”. Since he didn’t, he played from a wrong place and picks up a total of three penalty strokes (R27-1 & R-20-7) and must card a 7 on the hole.
D. As Tom teed off on #5 and had not corrected a breach of Rule 15-3, Wrong Ball, he is disqualified.

Answer
D. Tom was not entitled to play his original ball as he put another ball into play from the tee under stroke and distance. When he played his original ball, it was a “wrong ball” (see R15-3). Breach of R15-3 in stroke play is a “must correct” breach or the player will be disqualified.
Yes, Tom’s original ball was discovered by his fellow competitors before the five minutes expired; and, in equity, Tom is afforded the necessary time to identify the ball as his. But because Tom was not aware of the attempts by his fellow competitors to get his attention, he teed up and played another ball from the tee. There is no other interpretation of the Rules but to require Tom to complete the play of the hole with this new ball in play.

Everybody, please understand there is a clear and distinct difference between a legitimate declared “provisional” ball and another ball played under stroke and distance. A “provisional ball” must have that label attached. It is” provisional” to save time in case your original is lost or OB and doubt exists as to it’s status.
In addition to a provisional ball being stated as such the intent to hit a provisional ball must be declared within a reasonable proximity to the shot that created that need. The current USGA interpretation of that “proximity” requirement is about 50 yards of the stroke. Once you move beyond that reasonable proximity, you have generally negated all hope of saving time and thus the concept of a provisional ball is mute.
When you hit a ball that clearly sails over the house guarding the corner of the dogleg on the 14th hole, and you state to your fellow competitors something like “I’m reloading gun three turret one on the Missouri!”; then you are essentially admitting all hope of finding the ball in play is non-existent, as you and everyone else knows it is probably still bouncing down Real Lost Boulevard and some kid will have a nice prize awaiting him in his front yard. Your next stroke is not a “provisional”, but a new ball in play.
So, in this case Tom is going back to the tee to play another ball. It matters not that he wants to treat this as a provisional ball. The correct interpretation of the Rules tell us he has lost that privilege and it makes this other ball played from the teeing ground his ball in play under stroke and distance. Thus hit, this is the ball he must play to complete the play of the hole. When he went over and mistakenly played his now found original, because it was not his current ” ball in play”, that original ball is deemed a “wrong ball” (see def.: wrong ball).
Except in match play, strokes with a “wrong ball” is a must correct penalty. If you tee off on the next hole without correcting a wrong ball breach, you will be DQed.

=============================================================== TTour Weather Guidelines Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play. The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness). In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.
Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.
If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.

The Senior Amateur Tour, which is open to any golfer is accepting new memberships and will be conducting tournaments through September.
