Joey Moffitt of High Point was warmer than the outside temperature, in fact he was hot. Joey turned a one under par 35 back nine into an even par 71 for a first place finish in the championship flight. Following close behind was Eric Ardery of Durham at 73, and Howard Nemenz of Winston-Salem with a 74. In addition, Gary Roberson of Burlington shot a one under par 35 on his back nine to tie Nemenz for third.
In the A flight Wilson Shelton made the trip all the way down from Madison to Southern Pines and it paid off. Wilson carded a smooth 76 to take first place honors and edge out Dave Turner of Kernersville by a single shot. Dave’s 77 was just good enough to stay ahead of Gus Alford of Zebulon and Paul Nance of Graham, with each posting 78.
The B flight saw another excellent score as Dick Schuler of Pittsboro shot 74 which is his low score of the season. That was good enough for a 5 shot margin over Darrell Hagwood of Raleigh and Mike Wallace of Fayetteville, with each carding a very nice 79. Dick Kuehl of Sanford, Jim Shermer of LewisVille, and Huston Shaw of Winston-Salem were all in the hunt shooting 81.
The C flight also saw some low scores with Dwight Davis of Pittsboro coming out on top by shooting a very consistent 40-40 and an 80 total on the Ross classic course. Marty Carpenter of Southern Pines used his local knowledge to post an 82. While Rus Rilling also made the long trek from Madison and finished in a tie for second with an 82 matching Carpenter. AC Guarino was in fourth place alone carding an 85.
The next event for the Senior Tour is right down the road at the Country Club of Whispering Pines. The players will try to tackle The Pines Course with it’s new Bermuda greens.
