ACE, LOW SCORES HIGHLIGHT SENIOR AM TOUR BRYAN PARK EVENT

Greensboro, NC (July 14, 2011) - You had to bring your "A" game to Bryan Park on The Players Course if you expected to successfully compete in the Senior Amateur Tour event held there today. All four flights had low scores turned in by a majority of players who tee'd it up, with the winners going super-low. It's very possible that a number of participants today may have moved their Tour Handicaps into a higher flight range. One guy who doesn't have to worry about being "booted up" a flight is Rick Luzar of Pinehurst who took the top prize in the Championship Flight. His 68 led a strong field. High Point's Kim Mansfield was 2 back, while Summerfield's Steve Lambert posted an even par 72. "This was one of the largest and most competitive Champ Flights we've had in a long time, with 15 of 16 competitors in the flight breaking 80" said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck.
In the A Flight, not even a Hole-In-One could assure victory as Durham's Bill Martinson found out after "acing" the 168-yard, par-3, 5th hole. Martinson grabbed 3rd place honors with a 75, while Thomasville's Gene Jones got the win with a 72. Zebulon's Jim Alford, who's been a factor in most of the events in which he's competed was runner-up with a 74.
That 74 was what it took to take the B Flight competition as Sonny Gill of Trinity posted that number to finish 3 shots ahead of a trio of golfers - Greensboro's Dan Whalen, Durham's Tom Whatley, and Dexter Barbee of Burlington.
It's very rare that the winning score in each of the 4 flights are in the 70s, but Pfafftown's Jerry Tilley fired a 79 in the C Flight to pull off that feat. Tilley's 79 followed a mid - 90s effort in his last event. Archdale's Elby Hatfield and TJ Warren of Greensboro were 2nd & 3rd respectively with 83s. "Not only did Jerry's score ensure that every flight had a winning score at least in the 70s, but the entire field had a reason to be proud. With almost 90 competitors, not one player failed to break 100!" noted Hallenbeck.
The next Senior Amateur Tour event will be held Thursday, July 14th at Bentwinds CC in Fuquay Varina - a totally private venue that has been among the best conditioned in the region the last 3 years the Tour has visited there. Any amateur golfer over 50 interested in playing there can call Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556 for information.
