Spring Lake, NC (August 26, 2010) - 110 golfers tee'd it up at Anderson Creek Golf Club for the final Major Championship of the 2010 Tour season on the Senior Amateur Golf Tour. Forty of those participants were members of the B Flight. Not one of those flight members was able to shoot a number in the 70s, as 2 golfers hit 80 on-the-nose and headed out for a sudden-death playoff.
Greensboro's Vic Robertson and Fayetteville's Ray Miranda tied their first playoff hole. Unfortunately for Miranda his second shot on the second extra hole found the water in front of the green enabling Robertson to play conservatively and secure the win.
The C Flight also saw some extra hole fireworks as 3 players headed back out to the course to finalize matters. Dale Rucker of Rockingham, Earl Roe from Whitsett, and Greensboro's Charles Gunn were the only 3 members of the flight to break 90 as all 3 shot 86 during regulation play.
Rucker prevailed in style in the playoff, with a birdie on the 1st extra hole, the 516 yard, par 5, 10th. Rucker enjoyed a special day overall, as not only did he receive a $200 first place certificate, but he also captured the closest to the pin prize - a framed, triple matted picture of the hole on which he was closest. Just to cap the day off perfectly, he also walked home with a cash skin from the C Flight "Skins-Pool". "Who says the sun don't shine on one dog's butt all the time", quipped Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck.
Laurinburg's Jim McMillan, who earlier had tasted victory at Cross Creek Country Club in Mt. Airy, grabbed his 2nd win in the highly competitive A Flight. A single stroke separated each of the top 5 finishers in the flight. McMillan's 74 was one better than runner-up Mike Allison of Durham.
Playing close to home, Sanford's Craig Sturdivant was able to continue his strong run of Championship Flight showings as his 74 nipped Cary's Tony Griffin also by a single stroke. With this win, Sturdivant kept his Pinehurst Tour winning streak alive at 5 consecutive victories.
"Anderson Creek is a challenging layout", stated Hallenbeck, "just as any Major Championship course is supposed to be. The top guys in each flight were definitely on their game today".
