SANFORD'S STURDIVANT ON SR. TOUR BIRDIE-BINGE

Clemmons, NC (August 19, 2010) - Craig Sturdivant of Sanford has been tough to beat on the Senior Amateur Golf Tour this season. The Championship Flight stalwart had fired 6 birdies in each of his last 2 Tour events going into Thursday's tournament at Oak Valley Golf Club. Unfortunately Sturdivant was not able to match that total today. Unfortunate, that is, for the other members of the Flight as Sturdivant posted 7 birdies on his scorecard enroute to a 66 and a 6-shot win over local product Doug Masters of Clemmons. "It could have been even better" said Sturdivant, "I missed a 2-foot eagle putt on (hole) number 2".
"He's a birdie machine", declared Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "To show that kind of consistency over 3 events is pretty incredible".
Despite a day that started with a heavy downpour, the weather cleared just before start time and a number of players didn't seem to mind the wet golf course conditions at all. A perfect example was David Harrison of Winston-Salem who led the A Flight scoring with an even par 72, edging Lewisville's Mike Smith by a single stroke. "The fairways dried well" said Harrison.
The B Flight also saw some hot shooting as Tour veteran Terry Dearman of Greensboro fired a 74 to take the top spot from a pair of Tour members, Edward Burton of Durham and Greensboro's Clayton Henry who both posted 75s.
Rolesville's Bill Wilkinson had a "break-out" round in the C Flight for his first Senior Tour win. His 80 was 2-strokes clear of both Durham's Brian Costine and Greensboro's Charles Gunn. "Bill's a great guy who plays on both the Senior Tour and the Egolf Amateur Tour for the younger guys", said Hallenbeck. "It was good to see him post a number that he's capable of".
