DURHAM'S COSTINE WINS SR TOUR 3-WAY PLAYOFF

Greensboro, NC (August 5, 2010) - When Brian Costine's drive on the 1st hole of a sudden death playoff left him with 180 yards to the green on a 340 yard hole, he wasn't filled with confidence. He was up against 2 other C Flight members - Kenny Powell of Danville, VA and Franklinton's Jimmy Dollar, who had equaled his tournament score of 83. The Durham resident proved however, that you're never out of it until the hole's finished.
Costine hit his next shot just short of the green and calmly executed an up & down for the win, as his opponents encountered problems with the rough and sandtraps on the hole, both failing to equal Costine's barely routine par. It was the second high finish for Costine in his last 2 events as he posted a runner-up score of 89 at The National last week.
Normally 3-putting a birdie attempt from 6 feet on the 18th hole would be a recipe for certain disaster in the Championship Flight, but Sanford's Craig Sturdivant had built such a solid lead going into the last hole, that he was able to shrug-off that error and still enjoy a 3-stroke margin of victory over Pinehurst's Terry Collins. Sturdivant's 70 was 2-under par from the 6,565 yard tees the Championship Flight played.
The A Flight played from the shorter (6,216 yards) Gold Tees. Despite the fact that their tees were much shorter, the A Flight scores were still among the lowest of the season, as 3 players equaled or bettered par led by Zebulon's Randy Bunn with a 70. Doug Masters of Clemmons was second with a 71 and Danbury's Tim Wilson rounded out the top 3 with a 72.
The B Flight also had it's share of impressive scores as Greensboro's Jim Irvin used some "home-cooking" to lead the pack with a 75. Winston-Salem's David Frye was one stroke behind in 2nd, followed by Advance's Dawson Strider with a 77.
