Seven Lakes, NC (July 8, 2010) - While temperatures soared to nearly 100 degrees at Seven Lakes Country Club during the Senior Amateur Tour event held here today, it didn't stop the four flight winners from some hot scoring of their own.
Probably the most dramatic effort of the day was turned in by Durham's Brian Costine in the C Flight, who managed to post an 81, almost 11 full strokes lower than his Tour scoring average of 91.7. "I scrambled around and got it up and down a bunch today", explained Costine when asked how he managed to go so low. As it turned out, he needed a special effort to get the win as Mt. Gilead's Jerry Williams also turned in one of his best Tour efforts with an 83.
Two-time National Tour Championship Flight winner Alan Dirk of Sanford posted an even-par 72 to claim the top spot in the event. The steady Tour veteran wound up with a comfortable 5-stroke margin of victory over Greensboro's Lawrence Hicks, who was playing in only his 2nd Tour event.
Another 1st-year Tour member, George Paris of Durham, won a closely contested A Flight competition with a 75 that was 1-stroke clear of both Clemmons' Doug Masters and Steve Smith of Apex. Not to be outdone, the top B Flight Tour members in the event also posted strong numbers, as Greensboro's Vic Robertson edged Pinehurst's Wayne Ricks by one - 78 to 79.
