Pinehurst, NC (June 17, 2010) - Craig Sturdivant of Sanford is enjoying his run on the Senior Amateur Golf Tour. Playing in his first season "on-Tour", Sturdivant has made a habit of winning Championship Flight competitions.
On Wednesday, June 16th, he traveled to Charlotte to compete in the Charlotte Tour's River Hills event. He managed to bounce back from a bogey - bogey start on his 1st two holes to post a 2-under par 70 and grab a win by a single stroke. Today, playing at The Pit Golf Links here in a Pinehurst Tour event, he matched that 2- under mark with a 69 (The Pit is a par - 71 course) and coasted to a 6 stroke win over Pinehurst's Chuck Wilkins.
"The Pinehurst and Triad Tours have pretty much dominated Championship Flight play in our year-ending Senior Tour National Championship event", stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "This year we're coming back to the Pinehurst area again and if Craig tees it up for that event, he's going to help give our local Tours another edge along with the guys who have enjoyed success in the past".
While the going was relatively easy for Sturdivant in the Championship Flight, the same cannot be said for the B and C Flights winners who had to grab playoff wins against multiple contenders. Three B Flight players went back out on the course to determine a winner after Bob Cox and Terry Chase, both from Clemmons, and Greensboro's Travis Jones all shot regulation 82s. Cox squeaked out the win with a par on the 2nd playoff hole. The C Flight saw an unprecedented 5-man playoff become necessary with Whitsett's Earl Roe coming out on top over Raleigh's John Hall, Geoff Foss of Lillington, Richard Payne of Kernersville, and Autryville's Charlie Williams. All posted 90s on their original 18 holes.
There was no such drama in the A Flight competition, as Tommy Lee of Knoxville, TN enjoyed a 4-stroke margin of victory over Yadkinville's Tom Fagerli. "Both Lee and Sturdivant's scores were most impressive" said Hallenbeck. "Scores across-the-board were pretty high as The Pit is always one of the more challenging courses we play on-Tour. Those two did a heckuva job".
