SANFORD'S DIRK, ANOTHER "ACE" TOP SENIOR EVENT!

Asheboro, NC (May 13, 2010) - Alan Dirk of Sanford hit a 5-iron for his 2nd shot at the 515 yard, par-5, 3rd hole in the Senior Amateur Golf Tour Tournament held at Pinewood Country Club today. Landing safely on the green, Dirk calmly stroked the eagle putt home for a 3. Dirk wound up with a 2-under score of 70 and first place in the Championship Flight competition. Craig Sturdivant, also from Sanford, and Pinehurst's Ken Eichele finished two strokes back.
While Dirk's eagle held up in the friendly "skins" game that's a regular feature of every Senior Tour event, it wasn't the most dramatic hole of the day. That distinction belonged to Doug Masters of Clemmons. Using a 5-iron rescue club, he registered a hole-in-one on the 192 yard, par 3, 8th hole. Masters and his playing partners watched his shot land 3 feet in front of the hole and hop in on the 1st bounce for the 3rd "ace" of his career. It was also the 2nd week in a row that a Tour member achieved a hole-in-one, as Fayetteville's David Teal did the trick last week at Bermuda Run West Country Club.
Alan Dirk is going to have to deal with George Shadwick of Jackson Springs in the next event. After logging a 74 in the A Flight for a single stroke victory over Zebulon's Dale Rogers, Shadwick declared "Move me up (to the Championship Flight) next event". Durham's Mike Allison and Dale Rogers of Lawsonville finished 2 back of Shadwick.
Randleman's Fred Dodge, playing in his first event of the season, fired a 77 to take the top spot in the B Flight. Three golfers finished with 80s - Greensboro's Dan Whalen, Durham's Jerry Widdowson, and James Herndon of Hamlet.
Archdale's Elby Hatfield got off to a slow start in Tour competition this season, with a 91.1 scoring average in his 1st eight Tour events. The C Flight regular put it all together today however, as his 80 was a comfortable 5-strokes clear of his nearest competitor - Advance's Ron Alligood. Greensboro's Anselmo Arellano and Raleigh's Jim Stanley rounded out the top 4 with 86s.
"We've had some really good efforts lately from a number of Tour regulars and some new faces", said Assistant Tour Director Tom Kubla. "A lot of guy's games are rounding into shape going into next week's 'Major' Championship at Mill Creek. Should be exciting".
