WARMER WEATHER BRINGS HOT SCORES IN SENIOR AM TOUR EVENT
Graham, NC (March 11, 2010) - Despite another "gloom and doom" weather forecast that kept approximately 35 to 40 Senior Amateur Tour members from playing, 65 players did tee-it-up in near perfect golfing conditions at The Challenge at Hideaway Farms today. This event was the first regular season tournament of the 2010 campaign, as two previously scheduled events had to be canceled due to bad weather.
"I can't remember the last time we were under 90 players for an event at this course", stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "This has consistently been one of our most popular venues. Generally we'll pull over 100 for a Challenge event".
While most players in the event showed a bit of "rust" with the lack of practice or playing time available this winter, a few jumped out in mid-season form to secure wins with impressive scores. Probably the most eye-catching was the 71 posted by Doug Masters of Clemmons in the A Flight, giving him a comfortable 4-stroke cushion over Jimmy Jarrell of Greensboro. "This is probably the best round of golf I've played in 5 years", said Masters afterward.
Playing in his very first Senior Tour event, Greensboro's Mike Daniels secured a B Flight win with a 79 for a single stroke victory over Dan Whalen who also resides in Greensboro. In C Flight action, Cary's Al Tobin set a Tour record by stringing together 3 straight birdies on his front side - a feat never before accomplished by a C Flight member in Tour competition. Those birdies helped power him to an 85, good enough for a 2-shot margin of victory over two players - Sims' James Eatmon, and Advance's Ron Alligood.
Eric Ardery topped a small Championship Flight with a 76. Cary's David Shackelford came in 2nd with an 80.
"Hopefully this is the last of the bad weather forecasts for us for awhile', said Hallenbeck. We're picking up new members every week and I'd like to see those 100 man-plus events in the near future that the Tour has come to expect".
For information on playing in a Tour event, any amateur golfer over 50 can contact Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556, or email him at behgolf@aol.com.
