Seven Lakes, NC (July 9, 2009) - Zebulon, a cozy suburb of Raleigh, NC, is becoming the "Home of Champions" on the Harris Teeter Senior Amateur Golf Tour. At the Seven Lakes Country Club event held here today, two golfers who call Zebulon home walked away with victories in their respective flights. In addition, both accomplished the feat with flair, winning in sudden death playoffs.
Brent Massey finished tied with Pinehurst's Chuck Taubersmith after regulation play after both carded 1-under 71s on the 6,154 yard track. They both headed back to the 495 yard, par 5, 1st hole. Unfortunately for Taubersmith, his tee shot wound up in a waste bunker from which he hit his second shot out of bounds. When Massey was able to reach the green with a 5-iron in 2 strokes, Taubersmith conceded the win to the long hitter.
Randy Bunn, who also calls Zebulon home, had car pooled with Massey to get to this event. He wanted to make sure he had something to brag about in the car on the way home as well, so he decided he'd win his playoff in the A Flight. After the original 18 holes of competition, on which both shot 75, Bunn found himself tied with Cathage's Gene Greenawalt.
Just as their Championship counterparts did, they teed it up again on hole #1. The playoff may very well have ended right there as both had makeable birdie putts from inside ten feet but both missed, taking the playoff to the next hole. When Greenawalt, who had missed the green on the par-4 with his second shot, hit a poor chip and left himself a 20 ft putt, Bunn felt confident that a 2-putt par would do the trick for a win. He was right, as Greenawalt failed to can the 20 footer.
Another Raleigh area Tour member, Tom West of Holly Springs also walked away with a win, as he took top honors in the B Flight. He was the only flight member to break 80 as his 79 left him 3-strokes clear of Mount Gilead's Jerry Williams who took second.
As has been the case recently, the C Flight saw some low scoring as Youngsville's Jeff Brown had an 83 and finished one stroke ahead of two golfers - Tony Johnson and Mark Campanella, both from Greensboro. Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck said "As we do after every event, we'll be checking Tour Handicaps to ensure people are flighted correctly. Especially after seeing the impressive scores posted today".
