2012 SENIOR AMATEUR TOUR
THURSDAY, JUNE 14
THE CHALLENGE GOLF CLUB

The Challenge Golf Club

A four-star rated course by Golf Digest, this 6935-yard (from the back tees) championship par 72 layout features some beautiful holes in all of golf. The course was created by Larry Waggoner and built on wooded rolling farmland adjacent to the Haw River. The farmland was part of the Waggoner family Farm (Hideaway Farms) and provides a scenic round as well as chance for risk takers to score well.

The Challenge lives up to its name by offering all Tour members a great test of ability and shot-making. In addition to the greens, the perfectly manicured bermuda fairways are defined by lakes, thick hardwood forests and well-placed sand bunkers.

This is a favorite of the Triad, Pinehurst and Triangle Tour Members and is easily accesible to all.

  • Voted 2nd Best New Course in North Carolina by NC
    Magazine
  • Best New Public Course in the Piedmont by Carolinas
    Magazine
  • Currently Rated Four-Star Golf Digest Rating
  • Consistently voted as one of the Top 50 courses in North
    Carolina
  • Host of several Mid-Am Qualifiers

Know Someone Who Has Back or Leg Pain?

Several weeks ago we learned about a new device for treating back pain and sciatica that promised amazing results.

Of course we were very skeptical but did some research, read many testimonials and saw that it was clinically trialed.  We were surprised at the results and wanted to share this with Tour Members.

Several who had been suffering from various types of back pain and sciatica noticed immediate improvement.

If you know someone who would be remotely interested, you need to click on the link below and get them to order right away. Now you can get it in 5 days but no one can confirm that they will have any left by the time you get this newsletter...
  What is it?

A new, safe and easy alternative for back pain sufferers.  It is a unique product that affords users clinic quality spinal decompression wherever and whenever it's needed, with absolutely no inversion.

  • Clinically trialed
  • Unique design with no hanging upside down
  • Simple and easy but it works!
  • Improves flexibility and mobility
  • Hassle free, lightweight and easy to store
  • Comes with 30 days money back guarantee
  • Suits a huge range of body shapes and sizes

The Clinically Trialed Back Pain Solution

One of the testimonial was from Doris, who is now 93, telling  how she struggled with chronic back and leg pain for over 30 years...

She told about all the treatments she tried... multiple surgeries, cortisone injections, chiropractic care, physical therapy, massage - you name it and she likely tried it...

All the "experts" said nothing could be done (which is what many often say after their treatments fail)...

She said she felt that the past 30 years were lost and this is something you will  hear all the time and I'm sure you can relate to... maybe you haven't suffered this long but I'm sure you know the feeling...

Anyway, she went on to say that she has made a "miraculous recovery" (her words) and what really surprised her was how quickly she got relief...

Here's a paragraph from her letter:

"After viewing the 30 second video demonstration I thought that it looked easy enough for someone of my age to use. This was true and after the first time using it I felt quite an improvement. But after two weeks of use now I'm completely pain free."

In addition to decompressing her spine, Doris said she also implemented some of nutritional recommendations,  like cutting way back on wheat, sugar, dairy and grain-fed meats...

This device was designed to decompress the spine, much like an inversion table... and you've probably heard about how one of the biggest causes of back, neck and sciatic pain is excessive compression (or squeezing together) of the discs.

Research has already proven that decompression is one of the most effective treatments for addressing all sorts of back issues...

IMPRESSIVE WINNING SCORES IN SENIOR AMATEUR TOUR EVENT

Seven Lakes, NC

June 7, 2012

You had to go low if you wanted to take home first place "money" in the Senior Amateur Golf Tour event held at Seven Lakes Country Club today. First of all, there were 101 total competitors in the field and secondly, all four flights were topped by impressive scores. The course, which had been voted "Best Course in Moore County" for three years running in a Sandhills Magazine poll, was in tip-top shape and the flight winners took advantage of that condition.

Probably the most remarkable of the winning scores was turned in by the C Flight champ - Durham's Phillip Beane. His 79 was only the second time he had broken 90 in the last 3 years "on-Tour" and was 9 shots lower than his previous best score. He had a relatively comfortable 3 shot cushion over runner-up Travis Jones of Greensboro.

"Phillip's effort was something", stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck, "but due to past history will probably not be enough to push his Tour handicap into B Flight range. There are some other players whose scores today however, may very well result in a flight promotion".

One player who doesn't have to worry about such a "bump-up" is Pinehurst's Arch Reed. Mainly due to the fact that he's already playing in the top flight. Reed's 1-over 73 gave him a narrow one stroke victory in the Championship Flight over fellow Pinehurst resident Ron Hockensmith, who's round was highlighted by an eagle-3 on the 467 yard, par 5, 15th hole. It was Reed's 2nd victory of the 2012 campaign.

Matching Reed's 1 over 73 was A Flight victor John East of Rockingham, who enjoyed a 3-shot margin over another Pinehurst Tour member, Steve Smith. "We'll be taking a hard look at John's handicap for future Tour play", said Hallenbeck.

Two other players who will warrant a "check" were the top 2 B Flight finisher's - both from Pinehurst - Ed Zieglar and Tom Kubla. Zieglar's 77 bested Kubla by a single stroke. "Both of these guys have been very competitive this season', stated Hallenbeck, "they'll both undergo some handicap scrutiny".

The Senior Amateur Tour will tee it up again at The Challenge GC in Graham next Thursday, June 14. Any amateur golfer over 50 interested in playing in that event can call Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556, or email him at behgolf@aol.com.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be  a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve.  So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?   Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week.  You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.   There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

What’s the Score? #149

Concerning Out of Bounds, answer the following questions:

A. My ball has come to rest only 6 inches from the out of bounds line, but clearly in bounds. However, my normal stance for the upcoming stroke places one of my feet out of bounds. I either have to play in a different direction or modify my stance to keep both feet in bounds for the stroke. Correct or incorrect?

B Look at the following photo. Which of the four balls lie in bounds? Note that both a white line and stakes are present.

C. Reference the image above. With both stakes and lines present, if I want to play the ball on on the far left of the picture. May I remove the OB stake adjacent to my ball?

D. According to the local rules for Cow Flop Muni, all fences define OB unless otherwise marked. If my ball comes to rest in bounds, but close to a barbed wire OB fence that interferes with my swing, may I take free relief under the Immovable Obstruction Rule because I feel it is a dangerous situation (especially since I’m overdue a tetanus shot)?

Answers

A. Incorrect. The Definition of Out of Bounds contains the following statement: A player may stand out of bounds to play a ball lying within bounds. Therefore there is no restriction for your stance.

B. The two balls on the left are in bounds, the two on the right are out. From the Definition of Out of Bounds you learn that when both stakes and lines are present, the line defines the OB and it is the inside points of the line (course side) that you use to determine the status of a ball. If the entire ball is beyond the inside edge of the painted line, the ball lies out of bounds (the case of the third and fourth ball).

C. Unless there is a specific Local Rule permitting such action, you may never remove or reposition an out of bounds stake to make a stroke. (Definition: Out of Bounds, Rule 13-2).

D. Since the Local Rule sheet for Cow Flop Municipal declares unmarked fences as defining OB, this particular fence must be considered as such. From the definition of Out of Bounds we know it may not be deemed by the player to be an obstruction. No relief, so be very careful.

EcoloBlue - produces Atmospheric Water Generators that produce pure water from the humidity in the air. Incredible product and has optional solar panels.  I am sure even the engineers would appreciate this one.

Tour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses:  If the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather.  (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office.  The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.

Bruce
