2012 SENIOR AMATEUR TOUR
THURSDAY, APRIL 12
PINEWOOD COUNTRY CLUB

Par 3 Hole #12- Over Water to a Small and Undulating Green

Pinewood Country Club

This private course offers enough variety of terrain to challenge all of the flights within the tour. There are trees and water hazards that come into play throughout the course. However good scores can be had - just look at the defending flight winners from last year.

Over twelve years ago, the course underwent several changes. "If you played the course then, you noticed that a pretty good shot near the middle of some fairways would sometimes take an erratic bounce and roll into the rough. Many fairways were too high in the middle, sloped too severely to the sides. They fixed that and also did some mounding on the sides along with some waste bunkering to alleviate some good-shots-gone-bad situations.

In addition, they reshaped the greens areas and put in some bunkers to catch errant shots that would ordinarily be in deep trouble."Plus, they redid the greens and installed A-1. Pinehurst No. 8 has that grass, and it was put in at Pinehurst No. 2 during their recent renovation. The signature hole is #8, a 215-yard, par 3 from the back tees, requiring a tee shot over water.

You should enjoy this course for its challenge to your game and the fact it was recently rated 4 stars by the Triad Golf Panel. What a treat.

GREAT COURSE, GOOD SCORES HIGHLIGHT SENIOR AMATEUR TOUR EVENT AT BRIER CREEK CC

Raleigh, NC

March 29, 2012

Brier Creek B Flight Sudden Death Play-off  Participants:

(L to R)- Winner: James Herdon, 2nd Place - Ron Vanderklock

Temperatures in the mid-70s on a sunny day, coupled with a great golf course in excellent condition led to some strong scoring in the Senior Amateur Golf Tour event held at Brier Creek Country Club today. "We were very happy to be on one of the premier private courses in the state on a beautiful day like this", stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "This was our 1st of 4 'Majors' that we'll run for the Seniors this year. Events like this are a big reason why a lot of our members join the Tour in the first place".

Ahoskie's Bill Long led the scoring race in the Championship Flight with an even-par 72. He was 3 shots clear of a trio of golfers - Pinehurst's Rick Luzar, Cary's Steve Linton, and Jim Arlington of Apex.

Southern Pines' Ron Hockensmith, who has dominated A Flight play recently, will be joining the Championship guys in his next Tour effort as his 74 was good for another flight victory for him this young season. He needed every good shot that he hit as he nipped Rockingham's Sonny Rose by a single stroke.

The B Flight saw 3 golfers finish regulation play with scores of 80. One of those 3, Mike Garber of Carthage, left early and was not around for the sudden death playoff that accompanies any 1st place tie "on-Tour", thereby relegating him to a 3rd place finish. The 2 other combatants, Hamlet's James Herndon and Ron Vanderklok of Advance went out to determine a winner with Herndon emerging with the victory.

In the C Flight Tony Robison of Southern Pines fired an 84 for a 2 stroke win over Graham's Richard Farrington who posted one of his best scores in more than 12 years of Tour competition. The C Flight players were on their game today with no fewer than 10 golfers breaking 90.

"Being a 'Major Championship' means that every one of the 4 Flight winners today 'punched their ticket' to the year ending National Tour Championship that will be held in Pinehurst in November. That event is slated to draw the top 300 Tour members from the 13 Tours that stretch up and down the East Coast", said Hallenbeck.

There is no event planned for the Senior Tour for this coming week, as the Tour will take its' normal Easter Break. Play will resume on April 12 at Pinewood Country Club in Asheboro. There are a few openings for that event still available.

How to beat a [very] BAD economy

If you are tired of dealing with the current state of the
economy, here's something you should know:

The surest path to success isn't in learning how to navigate
through a terrible economy. The smarter path is to discover
how you can "create your OWN economy..." where YOU make the
rules!

The fact is, this system is setup for normal people to FAIL.

The clues are obvious and are everywhere.

What isn't so obvious, is that you don't have to settle for
the mess you see out in this economy.

There IS an alternative.

And this
new video reveals what that is.

Now I have to warn you, at the end of this video is an odd
twist unlike anything you've probably seen before.

If you do nothing else today, be sure you watch through to
the end.

It's clear that this guy in the video is on a mission. And
from his previous record of successes, it seems like he is
pretty much unstoppable.

Watch this video now.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be  a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve.  So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?   Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week.  You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.   There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Question from week #139

Jerry has hit his tee ball into an area of dense, thick rough. Good news: when he arrives in the area he finds his ball sitting on top of a dense clump of fescue, like it is sitting on a tee. Unfortunately when he addresses the ball his ball moves vertically downward into the clump. Jerry is then observed to lift the ball and attempt to reset it on top of the clump. It will not stay on top of the grass, so he moves to an adjacent spot, just behind the original spot where it will stay on top of the grass and then makes a stroke at the ball.

For his actions, Jerry is:

A. Not penalized

B. Penalized one stroke.

C. Penalized two strokes.

D. Penalized three strokes.

Answer

B. Penalized one stroke. When Jerry addressed the ball and it moved vertically downward, he breached Rule 18-2b, is penalized one stroke and must replace the ball. (See Definition: Move.)

This means he must put the ball back on top of the clump of grass. But, the grass will no longer support the weight of his ball, thus the lie has been altered. We have a Rule for this situation: Rule20-3b, Lie of Ball to be Placed or Replaced Altered. A reading of that Rule tells us, in this situation, Jerry must find the nearest spot most similar to the original, that is not more than one club length away and no closer to the hole. (See Rule 20-3b(i).)

What Jerry was observed doing was correct. The Rules do not require Jerry to notify his opponent, marker or fellow competitor as to what steps he is taking under the Rules, but it might not be a bad idea to say something in order to avert unwanted questions.

Tour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses:  If the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather.  (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office.  The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.

Bruce
