Colonial Country Club Tournament

Colonial CC

Last Regular Season - Are You In?

Colonial Country Club has invested about $1 million to rework it's picturesque course, the first major overhaul for the course since it went from nine to 18 holes in the 1960s.

The course, expanded to 18 holes by course architect Gene Hamm in the 1960s, has undergone the creation of completely new complexes around the greens, repositioning and addition of fairway bunkers and a rerouting of three holes — 10, 11 and 12 — to make them play more naturally.

Once they decided to regrass the greens, they looked atto see if there was anything else they could do and backed into a full-blown course renovation.

Work began in November 2013 on the greens complexes, with bunkers replaced with flat-bottomed bunkers with grass banks, larger bunkers broken into smaller ones and others filled in to create collection areas.

In May, the process of killing off the bentgrass greens began which will gave way to the installation of Champion Bermuda greens — greens that thrive in dry, hot weather, as opposed to the bentgrass greens that need to be babied during hot, dry North Carolina summers.

The course renovation is so extensive that the course was closed from the end of May until early August. Holes 10, 11 and 12 will be rerouted — with some to be positioned so they are played in reverse with the hole to be where the tee box is now. It's a move that will also double the driving range and create a short-game practice area.

So, for those Senior Tour Members signed-up to play this Thursday, this course will be even better than previous years.

"Improve your golf mental toughness 10-fold"

Every golfer has heard the saying "It's all in your head" or "Golf is 90% mental" or "Golf is the most mentally demanding sport in the world." Yet what do golfers do about it? Well, most often absolutley nothing! Not necessarily because they don't want to, but sometimes golfers actually think the mental game doesn't matter to them!

Click Here to Unlock Your Mind and Shoot Better Golf

EVERY golfer can benefit from increasing their mental toughness and harnessing the full power of thier mind!

Many golfers naively get stuck into thinking that the mental game only matters for elite players or pros who make a living golfing. Nonsense! EVERY golfer needs to use their mind properly.

  • It is your mind that determines how well you learn when taking lessons. (and this training course is packed with accelerated learning techniques that will have you absorbing more from lessons)

  • It is your mind that will allow you to set up to the ball correctly and commit to your swing (or not!).

  • It is your mind that will either stay focused under pressure and get you to make a smooth, fluid stroke when you need to drain an 8 footer for the win, or have you choking like a dog and collapsing like a house of cards when the heat is on!

NEMENZ BLISTERS BACK-9 FOR SENIOR TOUR WIN

Fuquay-Varina, NC
October 2, 2014

Winston-Salem's Howard Nemenz didn't get off to a particularly good start in the Senior Amateur Golf Tour event held at Bentwinds Country Club. He managed a so-so front side score of 40 on a spectacular golf course in perfect playing conditions. However, when he made the turn to the back-9, the Championship Flight stalwart shifted into high gear.

He eagled the par 5, 480 yard 10th hole and then ran off a string of pars until holes 17 and 18, which he both birdied. This gave him a back-side score of 32 and an overall par 72 for the day. He nearest competitor was Thomasville's Dan Anthony who finished 2 strokes back.

In the A Flight Raleigh's James Jones, who had won 2 weeks earlier at the Hyland Resort event, fired a 73 for the victory. Fayetteville's Bob McQueen was runner-up with a 74. "James started the year as a B Flight competitor", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "He sure has come a long way in a short time".

The B Flight belonged to Greenville's Pat Kelly, the only player in the flight to break 80 with a 76. He was 4 shots clear of 4 players who managed to hit 80 "on-the-nose". Kelly, a long-time Tour veteran, enjoyed his first win of the season.

The low scores continued in the C Flight with Hillsborough's John Cates posting an 81 for a 1 shot edge over Youngsville's Jerry Snead. "John has been tough in the C Flight all year, stated Hallenbeck.

The 2014 regular season will have it's finale next week at Colonial Country Club in Thomasville on October 9. There are still some spots available for that start.

Where Will You Be in the 2014 Season Ending Point Standings Race?

There are only two ways to get to the year ending National Tournament - win one of the four majors or be one of the Top 15 point earners in your flight.

As you plot your tour schedule, be cognizant of the fact, only the top 15 are guaranteed access. Usually, most flight races are tight and depends on how well you play and of course how many tour dates you participate in during 2014.

Do you know how many tournaments you will need to play and what place you will need to finish in each tournament to ensure you have your automatic invitation?

Rules Review

It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?

Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.

I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.

There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Question from week #272

Sean has hit his tee ball into a lateral water hazard. After a brief search and not finding his ball, he estimates the spot where his ball last crossed the margin of the hazard and properly drops a ball in accordance with R26-1c. Before he makes a stroke at this ball, a fellow competitor finds a ball about twenty yards closer to the hole, in the hazard. It is identified as Sean’s original ball. Sean lifts the ball he just dropped, and goes to where his original ball lay. He retrieves his ball from the hazard and, keeping the estimated point of entry into the hazard between him and the hole, retreats about four paces and drops the ball. He then hits this ball onto the green and takes two putts to hole out.

In stroke play, what is Sean’s score for the hole?

A. 4
B. 5
C. 7
D. Sean might be DQed.
Answer

B. 5. Sean has proceeded correctly. Initially, he estimates the spot where he believes his ball last crossed the margin of the hazard. This estimate was the result of viewing his ball flight from the tee. After he dropped a ball in accordance with R26-1c, but before he made a stroke at the ball, facts made it clear he had dropped in a wrong place. He correctly lifted the ball as per Rule 20-6, Lifting Ball Incorrectly Substituted, Dropped or Placed. He then again dropped a ball in accordance with R26-1c.

It is important to note because he had correct substituted a ball based upon the facts at the time, had Sean’s original ball, once found, been playable from the hazard, Sean could not have played that original ball as it lies. Since he had already taken action to substitute a ball under a Rule (R26-1), he must continue to play out the hole under the provisions of that Rule. The only thing he could have done, once he realized he had chosen a wrong point on the hazard margin for his reference point, was to change which option from Rule 26-1 he would employ’ i.e., he could have used the “flag line” instead of two club-lengths.

TTour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
