CAROLINA TRACE- LAKE COURSE

Hole #8 Par 3

Carolina Trace - Lake Course

The course architect of Carolina Trace is Robert Trent Jones Sr. and if you are a student of the game, you should know Robert Trent Jones portfolio of courses.

Jones, Sr. worked with golf legend Bobby Jones on the Peachtree course in Atlanta and again on the Augusta National course, the home of the Masters.  Robert Trent Jones, Sr. became a national celebrity with his complete re-design of the Oakland Hills South course for the U.S. Open Tournament in 1951.

He immediately became the "Open Doctor" and in quick succession re-designed such major venues as Baltusrol-Lower course, Olympic-Lake course, Southern Hills, Oak Hill and Congressional Country Club.During his career, Robert Trent Jones, Sr. designed or re-designed nearly 500 courses in at least 40 states in the U.S. and 35 countries around the world.

At Carolina Trace Country Club, members are fortunate to have two courses designed by such a world renowned architect. The Lake Course winds around the 315-acre Lake Trace with captivating views where maintaining focus on your game can be difficult "but fall asleep at your peril and potentially higher scores".

The course you will be playing at this private golf community  in 2 weeks is the Lake Course which opened for play in 1971Jones, creativity of design is apparent in the Lake Course and remains visible on every hole. The course is always in excellent condition and if you can play, don't miss it.

THREE FIRST-TIMERS TAKE SENIOR AMATEUR TOUR WINS AT WILLOW CREEK

High Point, NC

April 19, 2012 -

For Winston-Salem's Jim Pritchett, a Senior Amateur Golf Tour Flight win is nothing new. The C Flighter has registered multiple wins during his 14 year tenure "on-Tour". Being the only C Flight member to break 90 with an 89 at Willow Creek Country Club gave him his latest victory. He was 1 stroke clear of both Greensboro's Don Michaux and Durham's Bill MC Gee.

While Pritchett wound up in familiar territory with his win, the other 3 flights contested saw first-time winners take the top prize. In the A Flight Pinehurst's Gil Ro, who's been playing "on-Tour" for over 4 years, posted the lowest round of his Tour career and also the lowest round of the entire event with a 74, that left him 4 strokes clear of Zebulon's Randy Bunn.

A pair of Pittsboro members topped the B Flight Standings with Mike Brown emerging as the victor by 1 stroke over Glenn Wright - 81 to 82. Brown and Wright have only been playing "on-Tour" for a little more than a month. "Both Mike and Glenn have become loyal members in a short amount of time", stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "They've been competitive right from the start. This win doesn't surprise me one bit".

Arch Reed and Ron Hockensmith both started their Tour careers in the A Flight, but excellent play has moved both up to Championship Flight status where they finished 1 - 2. Reed, from Pinehurst and Southern Pines' Hockensmith shot 78 and 79 respectively to top the flight.

"Willow Creek proved to be quite a challenge throughout our flights", noted Hallenbeck. "Next week the Tour stops at Carolina Trace - The Lake Course - in Sanford. Fast, smooth greens in great shape will greet us there as well. Our players should be prepared for 'em".

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be  a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve.  So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?   Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week.  You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.   There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Question from week #141

.

Remember two weeks ago when Jerry found his ball sitting on a clump of fescue in the rough? Well this time, a similar thing happens, but he is careful when he address the ball not to do so too firmly. Unfortunately, when he starts his club back to make a stroke at the ball, the movement of his club causes his ball again to move downward. He completes the stroke but completely misses the ball. The ball now is on the ground in the middle of the clump of grass.

Jerry:

A. Has incurred a 1-stroke penalty, the stroke made at the ball counts, and he should play the ball as it lies.

B. Has incurred a 1-stroke penalty, the stroke made at the ball counts, and he should replace the ball on the spot or on the nearest spot most similar, no closer to the hole.

C. Has incurred no penalty, the stroke made at the ball counts and he should play the ball as it lies.

D. Has incurred no penalty, the stroke made at the ball counts and he should replace the ball on the spot or on the nearest spot most similar, no closer to the hole.

Answers

A. is the correct answer. I quote Rule 18-2b:

b . Ball Moving After Address

If a player's ball in play moves after he has addressed it (other than as a result of a stroke), the player is deemed to have moved the ball and incurs a penalty of one stroke .

The ball must be replaced, unless the movement of the ball occurs after the player has begun the stroke or the backward movement of the club for the stroke and the stroke is made.

Exception : If it is known or virtually certain that the player did not cause his ball to move, Rule 18-2b does not apply.

Rule 18-2 states three things that apply to Jerry's situation: 1) Jerry is deemed to have moved the ball; 2) Jerry incurs a 1-stroke penalty; and, 3) Jerry does not replace the ball must play the ball as it lies. Thus the stroke counts, he adds the 1-stroke penalty to his score and must now play the ball from deep in the rough.

Confusion often arises around this situation and the wording of this particular Rule. Remember, by definition a stroke is the downward movement of a club with the intention of striking and moving a ball. Jerry's ball moved as a result of his backswing, not as result of his stroke, thus his 1-stroke penalty.

The second paragraph of Rule 18-2b tells us in this situation Jerry does not replace the ball. It does not say there is no penalty, that was already decided in the first paragraph. Since he does not replace the ball, the obvious intention is to play the ball as it lies. In Jerry's case he completely missed the ball, but he could have just as easily moved it a few yards, or adjusted his swing to have caught the ball squarely and hit it flush. Because the movement of the ball occurred prior to the stroke, he cannot avoid the penalty. And, since the stroke counts, he plays the ball were it ended up.

It's important you understand, even if Jerry was able to hit the ball on the green or even into the hole, he would still have to count the 1-stroke penalty because the ball moved prior to and not as a result of his stroke.

How many of you would call such a penalty on yourself?

In a similar circumstance, Bobby Jones did. Bobby Jones Video (movie)

Tour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses:  If the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather.  (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office.  The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.

Bruce
