2013 SENIOR AMATEUR GOLF TOUR April 25, 2013 FOREST OAKS COUNTRY CLUB ----- |
Forest Oaks Country Club 
Carved from North Carolina hardwoods by noted architect Ellis Maples, Forest Oaks Country Club opened in 1962 to wide acclaim. It was already known as one of the best tests of golf in a state known for great golf tests when it became the home course of the Greater Greensboro Open in 1977. As the golf course matured, alterations to the course were necessary, so in 2002, the job of restoring the course was assigned to Davis Love III's Love Design Group. Working with design associate Paul Cowley, Love answered the key concerns of his touring professionals. At the same time, Love brought his understanding of what was needed to balance the demands of tournament golf with the needs of building a members course. Greens so smooth, you'll want to remove your shoes. One thing professionals and members alike can both agree on the conditioning of the fairways and greens is superb. The fairways have bee re-sprigged with Tift Sport Bermuda grass, a strain that handles the extremes of summer heat and winter wetness better than the old local strains. As a result, the fairways can be cut lower and smoother than ever before. Forest Oaks is first and foremost a member's course, and that was the primary motivation in Love's redesign. =============================================================== 7 YEAR "DROUGHT" ENDS ON SENIOR AMATEUR TOUR Sanford, NC April 25, 2013 Pinehurst's Mike Bradley has been a loyal member of the Senior Amateur Golf Tour for the past 7 years. During that time business affairs have limited him to playing an average of only about 10 events a year. Partly due to that fact, Mike had never tasted victory in a Tour event. That is until today when his 79 proved to be the class of the B Flight at Carolina Trace Country Club (The Creek Course). Bradley had to be on his game to win this one, as Lumberton's Clff Nance finished only 1 shot behind. "Mike's a guy who always seems to enjoy himself on the course and has never raised one complaint since starting with us", stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy". The Alford brothers, Jim and Gus from Zebulon, finished 1 - 2 in the A Flight with a 77 and 78 respectively. It was Jim's second week in a row to find the winner's circle. Lewisville's Jim Shermer was the only other Flight member to break 80 with a 79. In a race that was just as tight, only 2 strokes separated 1st place from 3rd in the Championship Flight. Winston-Salem's Howard Nemenz, playing in only his 3rd event of the season fired a 75 for top honors. Playing partners Steve Fox and Rick Luzar, who both hail from Pinehurst, finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. With 35 participants, the C Flight was once again the largest flight of the day with Myrtle Beach's Jim Steed taking home the 1st place Mastercard with an 85. The only other flight member to break 90 was Pittsboro's Dick Schuler with an 88. The next Senior Amateur Tour stop is Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro May 2. Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.

Answer A is FALSE. I may take practice swings, and if I happened to accidentally break a branch or knock off leaves in the process, there is no penalty provided I have done nothing to improve the area of my swing or line of play. (R13-2) B is TRUE. If the player accidentally knocks of a few leaves in the process of testing for his actual swing, provided there are many leaves to begin with and the loss of a couple of leaves did not materially change the challenge he faces, there is no penalty. (R13-2, and Decision 13-2/0.5) C is TRUE and D is FALSE. These deal with the same problem and if the stroke is continued, there is no penalty, but if the stroke is aborted (no stroke) there is a loss of hole/ 2-stroke penalty. =============================================================== TTour Weather Guidelines Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play. The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness). In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.
Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.
If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
