Bryan Park

There’s not much to say about this venue – they are great courses to play and you will play each this week.

The Champions Course opened in 1990 by the legendary Rees Jones. Therefore be warned, it can become a real skill challenge! It is a big time course that is always looked at and most times selected for competitive rounds to separate the real golfer from the pretenders.

Play this course and you will be able to match your card against many of the collegiate and future PGA stars as well as The US Amateurs.

This is an 18 hole championship layout featuring 97 sand traps, numerous grass bunkers, hollows and seven holes bordering Lake Townsend.

  • Runner up best new public course in the country Golf Digest 1990.
  • One of the best New Public Courses in The Country - Top 10 You Can Play - Golf 1991.
  • Four star rating and honored with the distinction of a GREAT VALUE - Golf Digest's Places to Play 1994-95, 1996-97
  • Noted as one of the few public courses worthy to host the U.S. Open - Golf World 1992
  • One of the top 12 golf courses in North Carolina - Tee Time Golf 1995

"Improve your golf mental toughness 10-fold"

Every golfer has heard the saying "It's all in your head" or "Golf is 90% mental" or "Golf is the most mentally demanding sport in the world." Yet what do golfers do about it? Well, most often absolutley nothing! Not necessarily because they don't want to, but sometimes golfers actually think the mental game doesn't matter to them!

Click Here to Unlock Your Mind and Shoot Better Golf

EVERY golfer can benefit from increasing their mental toughness and harnessing the full power of thier mind!

Many golfers naively get stuck into thinking that the mental game only matters for elite players or pros who make a living golfing. Nonsense! EVERY golfer needs to use their mind properly.

  • It is your mind that determines how well you learn when taking lessons. (and this training course is packed with accelerated learning techniques that will have you absorbing more from lessons)

  • It is your mind that will allow you to set up to the ball correctly and commit to your swing (or not!).

  • It is your mind that will either stay focused under pressure and get you to make a smooth, fluid stroke when you need to drain an 8 footer for the win, or have you choking like a dog and collapsing like a house of cards when the heat is on!

Click Here to Unlock Your Mind and Shoot Better Golf

"When you have a chance to shoot the lowest score of your life, you won't choke - You Will Go Low!"

THE SENIOR AMATEUR GOLF TOUR

HYLAND GOLF CLUB

TOP FIVE SCORES BY FLIGHT

===============================================================

CARY'S ADAMS DIPS UNDER PAR FOR SENIOR TOUR WIN

Southern Pines, NC
September 18, 2014

Despite the fact that the season is winding down for The Senior Amateur Golf Tour with less than a hand-full of events left during the 2014 Regular Season, 113 golfers showed up at Hyland Resort to "do-battle" under sunny skies. With that many participants ordinarily a player has to go pretty low to gain a win in his flight, and at Hyland, it was no exception.

Leading the way appropriately was Cary's Johnny Adams in the Championship Flight who posted a 1-under 71 to grab a 2-shot win over 2 golfers - Huntington, WV's Steve Fox and High Point's Joey Moffitt. Adams was the model of consistency with a front side 35 and a 36 on the back side. "He (Adams) wound up on top of a field of some of our very best Championship players today", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "It was a pretty impressive showing".

Raleigh's James Jones emerged as king of the A Flight with a 73 - 1 stroke clear of Creedmoor's Cecil Lockley. Jones, who started this season in the B Flight, once again showed he's got the game to compete with the A Flight's best.

The B Flight champ was also decided by a single stroke with Pinehurst's Wayne Ricks prevailing over Rockingham's Kevin Morehead after shooting a 77. For Ricks, a long-time Tour "vet", this was one of his best showings of the last few seasons. "When Wayne's on his game, he can go low", quipped Hallenbeck, "and he did at Hyland on Thursday".

The largest margin of victory was registered by James Eatmon of Sims in the C Flight. No stranger to the winner's circle this year, Eatmon enjoyed a 3 stroke edge over a trio of golfers - John Henely of Pinehurst, Rocky Mount's Steve High and Raleigh's Harold Booker.

Next week Tour members will take on the challenge of The Championship Course at Bryan Park near Greensboro. There are a small number of openings available for that event. Contact Hallenbeck if interested in signing up.

Where Will You Be in the 2014 Season Ending Point Standings Race?

There are only two ways to get to  the year ending National Tournament - win one of the four majors or be one of the Top 15 point earners in your flight.

As you plot your tour schedule, be cognizant of the fact, only the top 15 are guaranteed access.  Usually, most flight races are tight and depends on how well you play and of course how many tour dates you participate in during 2014.

Do you know how many tournaments you will need to play and what place you will need to finish in each tournament to ensure you have your automatic invitation?

Rules Review

It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?

Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.

I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.

There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Question from week #268

The team of Mary and Nancy are playing a four-ball match against Olive and Patti. All four players are on the putting green in two strokes, Mary is away.

Mary putts her ball too hard and it rolls by the hole by about eight feet, coming up a few feet short of and on nearly the same line as her partner Nancy’s ball mark. Olive and Patti both lie closer to the hole than does Nancy, so it is Nancy’s turn to putt next. She states that since she is away, she wants Mary to go ahead and putt first.

Recognizing Nancy wants to get a read from Mary’s putt, Olive and Patti quickly decide to concede Mary’s putt for a four. Mary walks up to her ball and quickly putts it towards the hole despite the fact it had just been conceded. It comes to rest about two inches beside the hole and she lifts the ball. Nancy putts next and makes her putt for a three, then both Olive and Patti putt and miss. Walking off the green, Olive and Patti protest the outcome of the hole based upon the fact they had conceded Mary’s putt and had expected her to lift her ball and not to give her partner a read.

How should the Committee rule?

A. Olive and Patti both made four, Mary made four and Nancy made three to win the hole.

B. Olive and Patti both made four, Mary made five and Nancy made five to lose the hole.

C. Olive and Patti won the hole as the side of Mary and Nancy were disqualified for the hole.

D. The hole is halved.

Answer

D. The hole is halved with 4s.

This situation involves several layers. To begin with, the Rule 2-4 does not prohibit a player from putting after their next stroke is conceded. So the player would not be penalized for doing so. However, Decision 2-4/6 does address this for four-ball or best ball match play. If the act of putting after a concession would be of assistance the player’s partner, then in Equity (R1-4), the partner only would be DQed for the hole. Thus when Mary putted her ball after the concession, because it assisted Nancy, Nancy would be DQed for this hole. Thus Mary’s conceded four represents her side.

Some of you may conclude that neither Olive nor Patti actually completed play of the hole, so did they have a valid score? The answer is yes. For both Olive and Patti, their second putts were conceded by the facts at the time. When Nancy made her putt for three, the best either Olive or Patti could do would be to tie. Recording a four for both Olive and Patti was never in dispute.

TTour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses:  If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather.  (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office.  The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
