Congratulations to all golfers that played at Meadowlands and the incredible scores.

Next week you are at Sapona Country Club in the Triad area.   It is a beautiful course and good scores can be had but stay below the hole.

The rules review this week deals with a ball stopped by your club and when you move the club it rolls in the hazard.  What do you do and are you penalized?

Where are you in the end-of-year Point Standing Race?  See links at bottom of e-newsletter to see where you stand.

2012 SENIOR AMATEUR TOUR
THURSDAY, MAY 10
Sapona Country Club

Sapona Country Club

Sapona CC was established and designed by Ellis Maples in 1967 and is set amid the hardwood forests of the Piedmont Triad.

Most of you know that the Maples family has a storied golf past dating back to the original courses in Pinehurst and their classic design principles can be seen throughout the Sapona’s golf experience.

Ellis Maples’s creative work and shotmaker's design will require you to have your course management 'A' game on in this week.  You will need to think your way through every shot, exactly as golf was intended.

There are good scores to be had at Sapona (maybe 6 under) but only if you know your distances, make sure your ball lands on the correct side of every green and with every approach stay below the hole, you can either be in the winners circle or expect a long and frustrating day.

Do yourself a favor, play this course this year and hopefully you will enjoy a low score.

FRANKLIN POSTS 7 BIRDIES - NEEDS EVERY 1 FOR SENIOR TOUR WIN

Winston-Salem, NC

 May 3, 2012

Danville's John Franklin was a last minute Championship Flight addition to the Senior Amateur Golf Tour roster that played at The Meadowlands Golf Club. He posted 5 birdies during his initial 18 holes of golf and finished with a 3-under par 69. Most events that would be enough for a comfortable flight win, but not this time as Tour newcomer Don Moore from Raleigh, playing in his very first Senior Amateur Tour event also shot 69 to force a sudden-death playoff for the top spot.

Both players showed Championship Flight game in the playoff, going par - birdie - par on their first 3 holes of sudden-death. Franklin reached back on the next hole - the 410 yard 18th, and registered his 7th "bird" of the day for the win. "It was only right that the playoff wound up being won with a birdie, after the way they played all day", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck.

The Championship Flight boys weren't the only ones to post eye-popping scores, as all 4 flights were topped by very low numbers. Probably the most remarkable of them all was in the A Flight where High Point's Larry Hubbard fired a 68 a for a 3-stroke margin of victory over Raleigh's Rick LaFata. This was also Hubbard's first Senior Tour effort, but he had a long history of scores on the Golfweek Amateur Tour, where he had failed to break 80 all year. "He made every 25 foot putt he looked at all day", said playing partner Len Bullock.

Ron Vanderklok of Advance was top dog in the B Flight with a 75, only 1 shot clear of Pinehurst's John Henely. In C Flight action, once again a "career Tour round" was posted as Greensboro's Mike Robinson shot an 80 for the win - an improvement of 23 strokes over his last Tour effort. Once again, he needed every good shot he hit as he finished only 1 stroke ahead of High Point's Richard Hartley.

"We'll definitely be checking Tour handicaps to see if anyone has earned a flight "promotion" based on their year-long Tour scores", noted Hallenbeck. "We'll be playing at Sapona Country Club in Lexington next week, and some of these guys might be playing in different flights then".

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be  a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve.  So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?   Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week.  You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.   There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Questions from week #144

In a stroke play event, Megan has hit her ball onto a steep grass bank that borders a bunker. She approaches her ball with two clubs in her hand. After selecting one of the clubs for her upcoming stroke, she lays the other club beside her.

Before she can address the ball, it moves, rolls down the bank and is stopped by her unused club. She lifts her club and the ball continues to roll down and comes to rest in the bunker.

How should Megan proceed?

A. Megan must replace the ball on it's original spot, and is penalized two strokes.

B. Megan must place the ball on the spot where it came to rest against her unused club and is penalized one stroke.

C. Megan must play the ball as it lies in the bunker and is not penalized.

D. Megan must play the ball as it lies in the bunker and is penalized one stroke.

E. Megan must play the ball from where it came to rest against her club and is penalized two strokes.

Answer

Answer B is correct.

Megan is penalized one stroke, but if she doesn't proceed correctly, will pick up additional penalty strokes. Because Meagan had not addressed her ball, she is not deemed to be the cause for her ball moving, thus must play the ball where it comes to rest. However, because her ball came to rest when it was stopped by her equipment she is deemed to have breached Rule 19-2, Ball in Motion Stopped by Player's Equipment. Accordingly, the player is penalized one stroke and must play the ball as it lies where it came to rest against her club.

We still have the ball, at rest, against her other club to deal with. The removal of the club results in the ball moving a second time and this is a breach of Rule 18-2a (Ball at Rest Moved by Player). However, because it is a related act, clearly a result of the breach of R 19-2, a second 1-stroke penalty would not apply. She only is penalized the one stroke. (A single penalty for related acts is covered by Decision 1-4/12, Principle 4.)

Playing her ball from any spot other than where it came to rest against her unused club would result in playing from a wrong place and because this is stroke play, she would pick up a second penalty of two strokes for a total of three. (R19-2, one stroke penalty; and the general penalty from R18).

Tour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses:  If the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather.  (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office.  The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.

Bruce
