2013 SENIOR AMATEUR GOLF TOUR
April 11, 2013
SAPONA COUNTRY CLUB

-----

Sapona Country Club

Sapona CC was established and designed by Ellis Maples in 1967 and is set amid the hardwood forests of the Piedmont Triad.

Most of you know that the Maples family has a storied golf past dating back to the original courses in Pinehurst and their classic design principles can be seen throughout the Sapona’s golf experience.

Ellis Maples’s creative work and shotmaker's design will require you to have your course management 'A' game on in this week. You will need to think your way through every shot, exactly as golf was intended.

There are good scores to be had at Sapona but only if you know your distances, execute your shot to make sure your ball lands on the correct side of every green and with every approach stay below the hole. You can either be in the winners circle or expect a long and frustrating day.

Do yourself a favor, play this course this year and hopefully you will enjoy a low score.

"Improve your golf mental toughness 10-fold"

Every golfer has heard the saying "It's all in your head" or "Golf is 90% mental" or "Golf is the most mentally demanding sport in the world." Yet what do golfers do about it? Well, most often absolutley nothing! Not necessarily because they don't want to, but sometimes golfers actually think the mental game doesn't matter to them!

Click Here to Unlock Your Mind and Shoot Better Golf

EVERY golfer can benefit from increasing their mental toughness and harnessing the full power of thier mind!

Many golfers naively get stuck into thinking that the mental game only matters for elite players or pros who make a living golfing. Nonsense! EVERY golfer needs to use their mind properly.

  • It is your mind that determines how well you learn when taking lessons. (and this training course is packed with accelerated learning techniques that will have you absorbing more from lessons)

  • It is your mind that will allow you to set up to the ball correctly and commit to your swing (or not!).

  • It is your mind that will either stay focused under pressure and get you to make a smooth, fluid stroke when you need to drain an 8 footer for the win, or have you choking like a dog and collapsing like a house of cards when the heat is on!

Click Here to Unlock Your Mind and Shoot Better Golf

"When you have a chance to shoot the lowest score of your life you won't choke - You Will Go Low!"

LUZAR'S 72 WINS SENIOR AMATEUR TOUR "MAJOR"

Raleigh, NC

March 28, 2013

Pinehurst's Rick Luzar overcame cold and windy conditions and a challenging golf course to secure a Championship Flight victory in the 1st Major event of the Senior Amateur Golf Tour for 2013.

Championship Flight Winner - Rick Luzar

Playing at Brier Creek Country Club, Luzar needed every single good shot that he hit due to the fact that Rockingham's John East finished only 1 stroke behind with a 73. Luzar blistered the back side with a 34 that closed a 2 stroke gap that East enjoyed on the front 9. The even par performance was Luzar's 2013 debut "on-Tour".

His victory in a "Major" earned an automatic invitation to the year-ending National Championship event that is held in Pinehurst in November along with the other 3 flight winners today. That event will host approximately 300 golfers from the other 11 Senior Tours nationwide.

Jim Alford of Zebulon proved to be the class of the A Flight with a solid 76 that left him 2 shots clear of Raleigh's Brent Massey. As proof of how tough conditions were, they were the only 2 golfers in the flight to break 80.

A Flight Winner - Jim Alford

In the B Flight nobody was able to break the 80 barrier with Graham's Lewis Herndon shooting 80 on-the-nose to grab the top spot. Jim's brother, Gus Alford, was 2nd with an 81.

Brier Creek B Flight Winner - Lewis Herndon

In C Flight action, Rocky Mount's Steve High made his 2013 Tour debut a successful one with an 85 that bested 37 other flight members for 1st place. James Howard and Jim Tesch, both of Raleigh were 2 back with 87s.

Brier Creek C Flight Winner - Steve High

The Senior Amateur Tour will be taking the next week off and resume play on April 11 at Sapona Country Club in Lexington. Any amateur golfer over 50 is welcome to play in that event by simply calling Tour Director, Bruce Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556, or by emailing him at behgolf@aol.com.

Where Will You Be in the Year-Ending Point Standings Race?

There are only two ways to get to the year ending National Tournament - win one of the four majors or be one of the Top 10 point earners in your flight.

As you plot your tour schedule, be cognizant of the fact, only the top 10 are guaranteed access. Usually, most flight races are tight and depends on how well you play and of course how many tour dates you participate in during 2013.

Do you know how many tournaments you will need to play and what place you will need to finish in each tournament to ensure you have your automatic invitation?

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score? Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm. There will be no trick questions or hidden information.
If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

ONLY WHEN THE FORM OF PLAY IS A FACTOR WILL IT BE STATED

Question from week #191

Of the following statements, three are correct, one is not.

Which one of the following statements is wrong?

A. When taking relief from an area of casual water in the fairway, I must not drop in a bunker.

B. When taking relief from a lateral water hazard, I must not drop in a bunker.

C. When taking relief from a sprinkler head on the fringe, I must not drop in a bunker.

D. When taking relief from a wrong putting green, I must not drop in a bunker.

Answer:

The only wrong statement is B.

That is Rule 26-1 and there is no restriction about taking relief from a water hazard and dropping in a bunker.

For the other three, the player is prohibited from dropping in a hazard or onto a putting green.

How to remember this?

If it’s free relief and your ball is not in a hazard to start, you may not choose to drop in one. If the relief is associated with a penalty (Rule 26 or 28) there is no such restriction.

Yes, you could take relief from one water hazard and drop in another or in a bunker.

Rule 28 has a slight variation. If your ball that lays unplayable is not in a bunker to start with, you are permitted to drop in one on your relief. However, if your ball is unplayable in a bunker, you must drop in the same bunker unless you choose the stroke and distance option (a).

TTour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
