SENIOR TOUR
MEMBERS GAIN PROMOTIONS AFTER FOREST OAKS TOURNAMENT
Greensboro, NC
July 31, 2014
Playing on some of the
best fairways the Tour has seen in recent memory, Sanford's Chuck Smith and
Dennis Bryant of Sophia both moved up a notch to a higher
level of competition with their results on the Senior Amateur Golf Tour event
held at Forest Oaks Country Club. Both golfers had their Tour handicaps
lowered enough with today's scores to gain promotions to the next level of
competition.
Smith,
who is competing in his first year "on-Tour", will go from B Flight to A
after posted a 76 that was 3 strokes better than Graham's Daniel Floyd and
High Point's Homer Baker. Smith has been a consistent force in the B Flight
since the season's start.
Bryant, who has
been a C Flight regular for quite a few years,
fired a 78. He also enjoyed a 3 shot margin of victory over Pittsboro's
Dwight Davis. "Both
Smith and Bryant hit the ball a long way", noted Tour Director Bruce
Hallenbeck. "That's always been there. The improvement with the rest of
their game has been noticeable".
Playing from almost 500
yards further back than the B & C Flights, Champ and A Flight winners produced
the same winning scores. 76 was enough to take the top spot in both flights,
although the Championship
Flight winner, Craig Sturdivant, had to do a little extra for
his win. The Sanford
resident had to hold off High Point's Joey Moffitt in a
sudden-death playoff for the win.
Raleigh's Don
Moore in the A
Flight didn't have to put in that "overtime" as he
was 2 shots clear of Zebulon's Jim Alford and Rockingham's Sonny Rose after
regulation play.

Tour
Weather Guidelines
Primarily, we adhere to
the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If the course is open,
we're going to play.
The only exception to
this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because
of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and
wetness).
In other words, I won't
let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition
might exist.
Because I arrive at
every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have
to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is
no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the
office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather
seems threatening.
If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a
cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to
show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.

Sanford, NC
(August 14 , 2014) - Everything worked out perfectly today for
Graham's Wilson Shelton in the Senior Amateur Golf Tour event held at Carolina
Trace (The Lake Course). Not only was the course in superlative condition with
sunny skies and mid-70s temperatures, but in addition to that Shelton was able
secure his first A Flight win of the 2014 campaign. Not that Shelton
hadn't tasted victory before "on-Tour' - he had 4 top finishes under his
belt going into this year, but this one was special as he recorded his lowest
Tour score ever with a 71. "The key to today
was my irons", said Shelton. "I was hitting it close all
day. On one par 3 I was about 5 feet away and on another it was slightly
more than 7 feet". (The second held up for a closest-to-the-pin
prize). "My putting was pretty good too". Creedmoor's Cecil
Lockley fired a 73 for solo second place. A total of six A Flight members
broke 80, but in the B Flight, Columbus, Ohio's Bob Ubbing was the only player
to surpass that mark with a 79. Ubbing was 3 strokes clear of Sanford's
Dick Kuehl, who was literally playing in his backyard as a resident of Carolina
Trace. It took three extra
holes to determine a C Flight Champion as Pinehurst's Marty Carpenter outlasted
Pittsboro's Dwight Davis in a playoff after both had posted 85s during
regulation play. Greensboro's Mike Hunter was 2 back of the duo. Once again the
Championship Flight played from tees that were almost 400 yards longer than that
of their lower flight counterparts. "Those guys were playing a
different golf course", stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. High
Point's Joey Moffitt emerged as the victor over Sanford's Craig Sturdivant by
one shot - 75 to 76. Next week the Tour will
play the season's 4th and final Major Championship at Anderson Creek GC in
Spring Lake. Limited spots are still available for that event. THE SENIOR AMATEUR GOLF
