2012 SENIOR AMATEUR TOUR
THURSDAY, MARCH 15
FOREST OAKS COUNTRY CLUB

-----

On March 15 - Play Forest Oaks Country Club

Carved from North Carolina hardwoods by noted architect Ellis Maples, Forest Oaks Country Club opened in 1962 to wide acclaim.

It was already known as one of the best tests of golf in a state known for great golf tests when it became the home course of the Greater Greensboro Open in 1977. As the golf course matured, alterations to the course were necessary, so in 2002, the job of restoring the course was assigned to Davis Love III's Love Design Group.

Working with design associate Paul Cowley, Love answered the key concerns of his touring professionals. At the same time, Love brought his understanding of what was needed to balance the demands of tournament golf with the needs of building a members course.

Forest Oaks is first and foremost a member's course, and that was the primary motivation in Love's redesign.

Come play this great member's course that was home to the PGA for 10 years.

Greens so smooth, you'll want to remove your shoes. One thing professionals and members alike can both agree on the conditioning of the fairways and greens is superb. The fairways have bee re-sprigged with Tift Sport Bermuda grass, a strain that handles the extremes of summer heat and winter wetness better than the old local strains. As a result, the fairways can be cut lower and smoother than ever before.

MATCH PLAY OF PINEHURST "PUTT-LAB" WINNER
A drawing was held at our Bryan Park event courtesy of Curtis Gunnarson, a Tour member who owns the Match Play of Pinehurst Golf Shop for a free session on his "Putt-Lab" diagnostic machine that is designed to improve your putting stroke.   The winner of that drawing was Jim Finnegan of Greensboro. Congrats Jim - we'll look for you in the Winner's Circle with your improved putting.   Curtis Gunnarson, who has joined the Tour this year owns Match Play of Pinehurst. He has graciously offered to provide a putting analysis service at selected events this season.   This will add an additional Closest-to-the-Pin prize at those selected events.   SAM PuttLab, the ultimate putting training system is an analysis and training system based on accurate ultrasound measurements. SENIOR AMATEUR TOUR ENJOYS 4TH SELLOUT IN-A-ROW

The popularity of the Triad and Raleigh/Pinehurst Senior Amateur Tours continues to remain strong as a full field of 122 Tour members showed up at The Championship Course at Bryan Park today. With a combined Prize and Skins pool of over $3000.00, the competition was fierce and the winning scores were very impressive.

A perfect example of how close the competition was could be found in the C Flight, where 13 flight members were within 2 strokes of the Flight leaders - Durham's Bill McGee and Charles Pace of Lexington who carded 87s.

Any 1st place tie "on-Tour" results in a sudden death playoff, in which Pace prevailed with a par on the very first playoff hole. Unfortunately, McGee fell victim to the dreaded "3-putt" as both players reached the green in regulation.

It should be noted that both the B and C Flights played from Tee boxes that were 400 yards shorter than their fellow competitors in the Championship and A Flights, but even so, the top scores in the B Flight were amongst the lowest ever shot "on-Tour'. Danville VA's Raymond Newman fired a 74 to take top honors in the flight. He was 2 strokes clear of North Myrtle Beach's Ron Caulder. "I'm making the jump to A Flight" said Caulder, as he received his Mastercard for his second place finish.

Fittingly, the best score of the day was recorded in the Championship Flight as Pinehurst's Chuck Taubersmith shot an even par 72 for a 2 stroke win over Danville VA's John Franklin. "Chuck has started the year out with a bang" said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "He's played solidly in our pre-season events as well as these first 2 regular season events. Could be a sign that he's ready for a big year".

Mark Cook of Boone fired a 75 in the A Flight to edge Creedmoor's Cecil Lockley by a single stroke. Lockley was looking for his second win of the new season.

The Tour stays in the Greensboro area next week, going to Forest Oaks Country Club for another Thursday encounter. A few spots remain available for that event. Any amateur golfer over 50 can contact Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556 (or email at behgolf@aol.com) to see about playing in any Tour event.

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be  a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve.  So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?   Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009. I will include one each week.  You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.   There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Question from week #130

Terry and Mike end up tied for low gross in their club's stroke play championship. As per the conditions of the competition, in case of a tie at the end of the final round, there will be a three-hole play-off starting at the 16th. After that is goes to sudden death.

On the 16th, a par five, both players are on the green; Terry in two, about 40 feet from the hole and Mike in three, six feet from the hole. Terry putts first, his ball stopping about 6 inches from the cup. Mike remarks, "Great putt, nice birdie, Terry."

Terry lifts his ball and moves to retrieve the flagstick. Mike makes his putt, for a birdie four. The players tee off on the next hole and twenty minutes later walk off the 18th green and report to the head pro with a hole-by-hole and nearly stroke-by-stroke recount of the playoff.

Who is the club champion?

A. Terry

B. Mike

C. Neither Terry nor Mike, they have to go to sudden death

D. No clue.

Answer:

The correct answer is: B, Mike. On the first playoff hole, Terry lifted his ball and failed to hole out. Thus, under Rule 3-2 he is DQed.

This is a stroke play event and even with just two competitors in the playoff, it continues to be stroke play and players must hole out to continue with the playoff. See R33-6.

Tour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses:  If the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather.  (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office.  The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start.
