The Sandhills Regional event was played Monday June 15th and Tuesday June 16 at Mid Pines Country Club in Southern Pines, NC. Players came from 12 different states and/or Senior Tours. The competition was intense, but fun.
In the Champ flight, Phil Pfeiffer from the Charleston SC Tour opened with a one under par 71, and followed on day two with a one over par 73 to take the victory at even par 144. Awesome golf Phil! Randy Hanna of the Central Carolina Tour also opened with a one under par 71, but fell just short of a playoff posting two over par 74. The one over par total 145 made Randy the runner up. A third player, Kevin Wooten from the Eastern NC Tour, started day one with another one under par 71. Day two had Kevin carding 75 to finish third with a 146 total score. Scott Roberts from the Charlotte NC Tour grabbed fourth place by shooting 79-one under par 71- 180. Dale Fogarty closed out the top five scoring with rounds of 78-76-154. Sixth place was a T6 with Randy Beall of Augusta GA carding 79-76-155 and Jerry Cunningham of the Eastern NC Tour posting 76-79-155.
In the A flight, Chris Ludwig of Central Carolina had two consistent rounds and led wire to wire firing off scores of 78-78-156 to win by a single shot. Outstanding golf Chris! Grabbing the runner up position, Ron Brady posted scores of 82-75-157. Ron’s round of 75 was the low A flight score of the tournament. Danny Sweetman from the Charlotte Tour turned in rounds of 81-78-159 that became the third place scores. Ken Gray of the Eastern NC Tour snagged fourth place with scores of 85-79-164. And fifth place became a three way tie at 166 when Billy Cauthen from the Charlotte Tour shot 87-79-166, Jon Wendt from Indianapolis shot 84-82-166, and Richard Johnson from the Eastern NC Tour shot 80-86-166.
In the B flight, the top of the leaderboard showed a lot of consistent golf. Central Carolina’s Dave Turner was one of the consistent players, and it helped him pull off a four shot victory with the winning scores of 80-79-159. Excellent golf Dave! The runner up spot had to be shared, because Andy Lane and Hal Moore, both from the Eastern NC Tour, shot identical rounds of 81-82-163. Fourth place was another three way tie, at 165 this time, as Jay London from Charlotte shot 84-81-165, Alan Sailors also Charlotte shot 83-82-165, and Johnny Adams from the Eastern NC Tour shot 81-84-165. Eric Walker, Charlotte Tour, stands alone in seventh place by carding 92-78-170.
In the C flight, Brian Headley of the Central Carolina Tour kept his game on even footing, and it allowed him to shoot the kind of scores needed to win. Brian’s 86-88-174 turned into a two shot victory. Excellent golf Brian! The runner up score, 84-92-176, was provided by Bobby Parlier from the Charlotte Tour, while fellow Charlotte Tour member Derek Loughlin picked up the third place finish by carding 83-96-179. Coming down from the Washington DC MetroTour Darin Sams bagged fourth place with scores of 87-93-180, as Mike Grant from the Charlotte Tour rounded out the top five scoring with his rounds of 90-92-182. Another Charlotte Mike, Mike James claimed sixth place by turning in scores of 95-91-186, meanwhile Keith Meeks of the Central Carolina Tour filled the seventh place slot shooting 96-94-190.
In the D flight, Sherrill Johnson of the Eastern NC Tour made the relatively short drive to Southern Pines pay, as he pulled off the three shot victory with his rounds of 91-88-179. Great golf Sherrill! TJ James out of the Augusta GA Tour took the runner up honors with his scores of 88-94-182. Third place was snagged by Kelly Brown of our Central Carolina Tour, as he fired off rounds of 95-89-184, while Allen Iverson from the Charlotte Tour took down fourth place posting rounds of 99-90-189. Fifth place was captured by Michael Kessler of the Central Carolina Tour with his scores of 97-95-192, and Jamie Hill from the Eastern NC Tour carded scores of 100-94-194 ending the day in sixth place. Doug Pogue from the Arkansas Tour ended the event in seventh place by recording rounds of 96-100-196.
