The 2009 Harris Teeter Senior Tour completed its 8th tournament of the season, “Just Barely” with 92 players competing on Wednesday at Cabarrus CC. Thanks to all the staff at the Cabarrus for allowing us to ride the fairways and gave us the best fairways of the season! Championship Flight: David Watterworth got things going early with back to back birdies at holes 2 & 3. After bogies at 6 & 7 Watterworth turned the front nine at an even par 36. Robert Surratt and Chuck Wunsch playing in Watterworth’s group also turned at even par 36. Watterworth finished strong with birdies at 14 and 17 to edge out three players by one. Gaines Beard did not let a double bogie at the par five first hole discourage him, instead he quickly righted the ship with birdies at 3, 6 and 8 to turn the front side at 35 (1 under par). Missing several birdie putts on the back, Beard did manage to birdie 13 and his final hole bogey at the 17th completed a fine round of 1 under par 71. Beard beat out Richard Krapfel & point’s leader Ken Power’s on the scorecard playoff for second place. Krapfel gave it a valiant effort on the back firing a 2 under par 34 to almost catch Watterworth. A Flight: Cecil Lockley visiting from the Raleigh tour captured his first title of the season by just one shot. Lockley shot a smooth 75 to beat out River Run’s Buck Carter by just one shot at 76. Jim Graham was the only other A Flight player to break 80 on Wednesday coming in third place with 79. Jim Brand and Randy Holland both fired 80’s with brand nipping Holland on the card for fourth place. B Flight: Bill Maryman won for the first time this season with a strong 77 at Cabarrus CC. Four players were right behind Maryman at 79 with Sam Carpenter winning the log jam playoff for second. Beattie Armstrong got third and Jimmy Hahn fourth with Bill Holland rounding out the top five spots with all players shooting 79’s. C Flight: Dwight Miller has been knocking on the door but final broke through with 86 and his first win. Sindo mayor and Charlie Harkey tied at 88 but is was Mayor beating Harkey on the card for second place. Hal Miller was the only other player to break 90, with an 89 good enough for fourth spot. Once again all the flights were very tightly contested. For full view of the results just go to the web page and click on tournament results.
