Robert Surrat (Champ Flight) Lee Sargent (A Flight) Jerry York (B Flight) Tony Schiffer (C Flight) all victorious at River Run CC!
Thanks to everyone who played Wednesday at River Run our biggest event this season with 112 players total. Championship Flight: Robert Surratt would like the tour to play River Run and CC of Salisbury a lot, since he always seems to win or place high at these courses. On Wednesday nothing was different for Surratt at River Run as he posted and even par 72 to win by one shot. Surratt’s round was very consistent 37-35=72. Finishing just one shot back was Statesville’s Mark Wagner who grabbed second place with a 73. Ken Powers has been on a birdie draught lately but still managed a third place finish with 75. This is the second tourney in a row for Powers not birding a hole. Rounding out the top four was Brad Kroll at 76. A Flight: The shot of the day came in A Flight as Jim Buchanan aced the par three 8th hole with a six iron. It was Jim’s first hole-in-one in his 40 year golfing career. The hole-in-one help Jim tie for first place with 80 against Lee Sargent but it was Sargent who was victorious on the scorecard playoff. Don’t think that much mattered to Buchanan today as he finally broke the 40 year draught one aces. Right behind them were Len McAlister and newcomer Greg Johnson who finished one shot back at 81. McAlister nipped Johnson on the card for third place, but congrats to Greg anyway for cashing in his first ever Senior Amateur Tour event. B Flight: Jerry York and Lonnie Nichols both tied Wednesday with 78’s but it was York beating out Nichols on the card for the victory. Also after the new handicaps were calculated both men came in at 7 handicaps so they will be moving along to the A flight at Catawba Springs. Congrats to both Jerry and Lonnie on there improved play and promotion. Robert Winfrey got back in the money Wednesday as he finished in third place with a smooth 80. Bill Shenoha was right on his heels but finished with 81 good enough for 4th spot. C Flight: Tony Schiffer won for the first time ever on tour as he beat six other players by only one shot for the victory. Schiffer fired an 87 to beat all the 88’s that were right on his tail. Now to the 88’s playoff; six players finished on this number but it was Joe Gendoes beating out everyone for second place. Don Elsass grabbed third place and Bill Lovine 4th. The other 88’s were David Ehret, Jerry Hoogeveen and William Looper. Gendoes 88 pushed his tour handicap down to a 13 so congrats to Joe who will be moving up to B flight next week!
