Championship Flight: Ted Cox finally breaks through for his first Senior Amateur Tour win. After seven 2nd place finishes Ted Cox finally has his first career senior victory. It did take a score card playoff but Cox got his first victory over Jeff Rausch; both players shot even par 72’s on Monday. Cox was consistent all day shooting 36-36=72 while Rausch came on late to almost nip Cox. Rausch started his round Double and then bogie but turned it on after that making five birdies in his last 14 holes which included birding 17 and 18. Ken Powers and Butch English both finished with 76’s but it was Powers getting third on the card. A Flight: Gary Schatz and Larry Culler also finished tied for first place with stellar rounds of 75’s. Schatz also got his first win of the season by winning on the card playoff. William Greiner recently moved up from B flight and finds a third place finish at the Peninsula with 77. A host of players rounded out the top five with Brian Failing, Lee Sargent, Chris Cross and Jim Brand all firing 79’s. Failing beat out everyone on the card for 4th place money. B Flight: Bill Maryman has been a fixture on the tour for nine years and in all those rounds has always competed in B Flight. With his improved play all season and his lowest round ever on tour (74) , Bill graciously accepted his new competition in the A Flight. Great job Bill all your friends in B flight will miss you, well not all of your friends as some of them moved up after this event. Finishing in second place was John Leak at 77 and also gets a promotion to A flight with his handicap going to 8.4. Tommy Simpson shot 79 to grab third and also followed Maryman and Leak to A Flight. David Courtright also shot 79 but got 4th place on the card and will remain in B flight for now! C Flight: Joe Gendoes had his best round of the season and won by three shots Monday firing a smooth 80. Don Elsass also shot his best ever tour round but finished in second place with 83. Newcomer Larry Griffin handled the first time jitters well and cashed in third place with 89. Jim Wittersheim and Larry Hinson rounded out the top five spots with 91’s. The next stop on tour takes us to River Run CC. Wednesday May 26th is the date a 10am shotgun start.
