The 2010 Senior Amateur Tour season started yesterday at Cabarrus CC finally! After 4 straight cancellations due to weather the rain stayed away and the players enjoyed the great layout at Cabarrus CC. Congrats to Ken Guilford all the staff for the great playing conditions given the winter we have had this season. A special thanks to each of the 96 players which played the event in 4 hours and 15 minutes. Everyone enjoyed the round at this speed, even if you did not play well, it was just nice to be back out competing again. Championship Flight: Ted Cox was waiting for the last card to be turned in before celebrating his first victory on the Senior Amateur Tour. Cox is 6 for 7 on second place finishes and unfortunately for Ted the last card turned in by Jeff Rausch beat him again. Jeff Rausch obviously has been working on his game in the off-season as he lit up Cabarrus on Wednesday with 2 under par 70. Rausch’s round was helped by his hot putter in which he had to only had to roll the rock 24 times. Lee Sargent a playing in Rausch’s group said it was not only his hot putter but a very solid ball striking round. Congrats to Jeff on the season first under par round. Ted Cox finished second again with a fine even par round of 72. Jerry Sennett finished in third place one shot back of Cox with 73. Dennis Helms back on tour this season rounded out the top four spots with 76. A Flight: Larry Culler started out the season no knowing if his cart would make the entire 18 holes, but once that problem was solved he grinded hard en route to an opening season victory of 74. Cedarwood’s Don Laney also got off the gates early this year placing second with a smooth 76. Chris Cross finished one back of Laney for third place with 77, and Lee Sargent was the only other A Flight player to break 80 with a fourth place 79. B Flight: To all you new members B flight it is always decided by one or 2 shots for the top five spots. On Wednesday Frank Czaniecki capture the win with an 80 which included a strong back nine of 37. Frank started slow but heated up on the back nine to secure his victory at Cabarrus. As stated earlier, right on Frank’s heels were four players all with 82’s. As tour rules dictate we go to a handicap hole sudden death playoff to decide who wins gift cards for the top 4 spots. Conway Powell finished second on the playoff and Bill Barnett and James Brannen got third and fourth spots. Lonnie Nichols also shot 82 but was last on the card playoff to finish in fifth place. C Flight: Newcomer Stan Wetmore debuted with his first tour victory with a strong 83 on Wednesday, if Stan’s great play continues at Salisbury will be awarded a promotion. Way to go Stan on a great round on Wednesday. Van Storie also used all his off season work to post a strong score of 84 on Wednesday. Van commented after the round that his goal is to get to B flight this season after struggling to get his game back after surgery. Bill Lovine and Jeff Davidson were the only other 2 players in C Flight to break 90. Lovine finished in third place with 86 and Jeff Davidson was fourth with 87. The tours next stop will take us tour favorite CC of Salisbury on March 17th a 10:00pm shotgun start. Please email me back (Yes or No) if you wish to get entered. Practice rounds will be only $35 Tuesday-Thursday only for all participants. Show your tour card to get the rate please.
