Wild Dunes Harbor Champs

Spring Starter for a New Year and a New Tour

The Charleston tour kicked off their first ever tournament at Wild Dunes Harbor Course on the Isle of Palms on Wed March 1st.  It must have pleased the golf gods because it was a picture perfect day on a beautiful golf course.

The Champ Flight was battle all day as Rand Mendez, Jack Stone and Mitch Marchman all finished within 2 stroke of each other.  As always the 17th and 18th holes at the Harbor course were the difference maker’s as Jack had his hand on the trophy after 16 only to find some trouble on 17.  In the end Rand fired a great 3 over par to secure his first ever Champ Flight Victory.

The A flight had one guy shoot the round of his golfweek life as yours truly fired his lowest round in 18 years  and lowest ever round on the golfweek tour with a 1 over par 71 for the victory and a 5-shot win over Kevin Hadlock who fired a very smooth 76.  Along with the Victory Yours truly earned a well-deserved promotion to the Championship flight.  Third Place went to newcomer Dan Fagley who along with James Ravenel both fired rounds of 79 with Dan taking the scorecard playoff by virtue of his back nine score of 38 to James’ 40.

The B flight saw two friends play together all day and then to show they couldn’t get enough of each other, Roland Hoffman and Billy Hill decided to tie each other to play some extra holes.  I should say extra hole, as after both carding spectacular rounds of 74, Roland took care of business on the first playoff hole to secure the victory.  Rounding out the top three by virtue of another scorecard playoff was John Broome who tied Larry Hyman but fired a and even par back nine to secure the third-place finish.

The C flight was also a battle as Dennis Guerriero and Terry Lawson battled back and forth all day for the lead.  Again it was the closing holes that helped determine the winner as Dennis hung on despite Terry’s charge on the last few holes.  Terry was tied with Dennis till he hit a bump in the road on holes 14/15 to fall six shots back.  Terry tried and made up five shots but Dennis held him off in an epic battle, 81 to 82.  Rounding out the top three was Kevin Allardice who carded a nice round of 90.

The D flight saw Bob Hill take on Mike Miller all day and post a very respectable 96 to take home the first place trophy.

Overall it was a great day and our next event is at the Plantation Course @ Edisto, come on out for some more fun and competitive golf!
