Rusty Ward Scores Hole in One

Piedmont Virginia Tour holds 4th Major at Danville for Season Finale

Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateur Golf Tour Close Out 2014 Season at Danville Golf Club

With season flight championships up for grabs in two of the four flights 13 Tour golfers gathered at Danville Golf Club Monday October 27th to compete in their final season tournament . They found the course in excellent condition while yet quite a challenge. Only nine birdies were recorded for the day and no tour members were able to break the 80 mark .

Doug Brandmahl from Manakin Sabot was able to card two of the birdies and finish regulation play tied at 83 with a Triad NC Tour member Wilson Shelton in the A- Flight. The pair went to hole #1 for a playoff where Brandmahl was able to claim the win with a par as Shelton carded a bogey. It was Brandmahl's 1st Tour win and qualified him for competition in the National Finals next month in Pinehurst.

Raymond Rice from Hurt won his 5th tour tournament of the season in B Flight action with a score of 86. It was Rice's first tournament back after missing 7 tournaments due to travels. Richard Hartley, a Triad Tour member turned in an 86 to claim the 2nd place position after a card match. The tours B-Flight season championship however came down to the final hole of the day before a champion could be named. There were three players in the running for the flight's top spot coming into today's round in which double points were awarded as it was the final Major of the year. Bill Knarr, Jerry Delbridge, and George Russell all had the opportunity to claim the spot depending on how they placed in today's round. The three were paired together and Russell appeared to be on his way as he led the threesome through the first 11 holes before closing with two double bogies and a triple bogey on his last four holes. This letdown allowed both Knarr and Delbridge to overcome his lead as they finished tied for 3rd place for the day at 87. Russell finished 4th at 91. With Knarr holding a mire 40 point advantage over Delbridge as they entered the final round ; he was able to claim the Flight's Top Spot for the 3rd year in a row with their tie.

David Davis ; 2013 National C-Flight Champion was able to hold off the rest of the field today for his 4th season win with a score of 88. Only a stroke behind at 89 were Charlie Snipes and tour director Kenny Powell. Powell was able to claim the Flight's season championship for the 2nd straight season with the 2nd place finish today.

The Tours Overall Points Champion for the year was Rusty Ward from North Prince George who was also the A-Flight champion for the 2nd year in a row. Wards 6825 points was the highest total earned in a season in the tours 3 year existence. As the Tour's Points Champion Ward will receive a 1 year Black Card Membership from Tour sponsor Planet Fitness of Danville.

All Flight winners as well as many of the tours other players will now travel to Pinehurst next month to compete in the National Finals .

Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateur Tour Points Leader gets Ace at Sleepy Hole

The season points leader Rusty Ward from North Prince George was not able to finish in 1st place today in his A Flight but did score his 1st Hole in One ever today at Sleepy Hole Golf Club. After the round Ward stated that he just had a feeling that he was going to make an ace soon as his iron play had improved recently. Rusty’s Ace came on the 104 yard two tiered 4th hole. Using a Titleist Sand wedge wards tee shot flew about 12 feet over the flag, hit on the upper tier and spun back down and into the hole. Ward went on to card 2 birdies to go with the ace but finished in 2nd place in the A Flight with an 84. Dean Adams from Jarratt carded 3 birdies for a 75 in route to his 2nd tour victory of the season in the flight. Sleepy Hole gave up 19 birdies and 1 Hole in One to the group of 18 today as conditions were great with near perfect weather.

The Championship Flight was led once again by former Tour National Champion Jim Gallagher from Yorktown with a two under par 70. Gallagher is now 6 for 6 in tournament wins on tour this season with a combined score of -12. Jim leads the Virginia Tours Championship Flight as they head to Pinehurst in November for the National Finals. Gallagher also recently qualified for both the USGA Senior Amateur and the VSGA Mid-Am Senior Championship playoffs. Tip Wight from Arlington finished in the 2nd spot with a 78.

In B Flight action the tour’s top 2 players in the flight had a true shootout for the top spot. Bill Knarr from Verona; the Flight leader took a 4 stroke lead over 2nd place Jerry Delbridge from Emporia after the first 5 holes. But Delbridge fought back to tie up after 9 holes. The two then traded the lead back and forth for the next 8 holes coming into their final hole dead even. Delbridge then carded a par for an 84 for his 3rd win of the season and only 44 points behind Knarr with 1 tournament to go. Knarr who double bogied the final hole finished 2nd with an 86.

The C Flight saw Bill Crowley from VA Beach playing in only his 3rd tour tournament of the year turn in his best round of the three for the top spot with an 88. It was Crowley’s 1st Tour victory. Willard Vicks from Danville also shot his best round of the year on Tour at 92 to capture the 2nd place spot for the day.

The Tours final regular season tournament is next Monday, October 27th at Danville Golf Club. The tournament is also the Tours 4th MAJOR of the season with double points going to all finishers. Both the B & C Flights Season Champions will be decided at this event and all season flight winners will get their entry paid to the National Championships. This should be a very interesting closing event. Play will begin at 10am.

Rules Review

It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?

Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.

I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.

There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to:usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

Question ?

Nate is playing a par 3 over a pond marked with yellow stakes.  He skulls his tee shot into the rocks that line the far-side bank and the ball bounces back over the pond coming to rest on the tee side of the water, but still a couple feet inside the margins of the hazard.

He feels he can play the ball as it lies even though it is on a steep slope.  After removing a couple of leaves he steps about a foot away and takes two practice swings, hitting the ground each time.  Nate then hits this shot fat and it ends up in deep water.

Nate moves  back about four yards into the fairway, keeping the spot where his ball last crossed the margin of the hazard on his tee shot between him and the flag, and drops a ball which slightly embeds in soft turf.  When he lifts the ball to clean and re-drop a fellow competitor tells Nate there is a Drop Zone to his right about the same distance to the flag.

So Nate goes to the DZ and drops the ball. The ball rolls 1 1/2 yards towards the hole and comes to rest outside the DZ’s painted white line.  Nate retrieves his ball and re-drops.  This time the ball remains where it was dropped.  He hits this ball onto the green and takes two putts to complete the play of the hole.

In stroke play, how many penalty strokes did Nate just incur?

A. 4

B. 6

C. 7

D. 9

===============================================

Answer:

C. 7

1. Moving leaves inside hazard, breach of Rule 13-4c = 2penalty strokes.

2. Touching ground in hazard while making practice swings, breach of Rule 13-4b = 2 penalty strokes (multiple breach of same Rule, related acts, single penalty.  This could also be construed as testing the condition of the hazard, R13-4a, but would still be considered related acts and single breach.  See Decision 1-4/12)

3. Relief from water hazard, R26-1 = penalty stroke.

4. Playing from wrong place after his dropped ball embedded = penalty strokes.  When he first dropped the ball, it was in play.  He is not “re-dropping” a ball (R20-2c) as a part of the relief procedure from R26-1.  He is taking relief for an embedded ball, R25-2, so any thought of using the DZ should never have come up.   When he played from the DZ he played from a wrong place (R20-7).  Likely not a serious breach. But a 2-stroke penalty under R25.

I have already explained the fact that it is inapplicable to use the DZ as intended.  Thus, at this juncture, the DZ is nothing more than part of the area through the green.  When he dropped the ball in this area, he was doing so under Rule 25-2.  Thus when the ball rolled closer to the hole, the player was required to re-drop (R20-2c).  So what he did was correct under the circumstances even if he though he was probably doing it for the wrong reason.

If by chance, as you play a hole, your ball comes to rest in a Dropping Zone, treat it like any other part of the course.  The special dropping and re-dropping Rules from Appendix I only apply if the player is dropping a ball in the DZ as an option under whichever Rule is applicable to that DZ (water hazard, TIO, etc.)

Nate should have recorded a 12 on the hole

Where Will You Be in the 2014 Season Ending Point Standings Race?

There are only two ways to get to the year ending National Tournament - win one of the four majors or be one of the Top 15 point earners in your flight.

National Finals will again be in Pinehurst ( Last year there- Hilton Head next year) November 10-12th with Skins Game on November 10th at Pinehurst #9 ( National Golf Club ) Other courses used this year will be Pinehurst #9, Pine Wild ( Holly Courses), Seven Lakes, and Legacy. More information will be posted later on Senior Amateur Tour main web-site.

As you plot your tour schedule, be cognizant of the fact, only the top 15 are guaranteed access. Usually, most flight races are tight and depends on how well you play and of course how many tour dates you participate in during 2014.

Do you know how many tournaments you will need to play and what place you will need to finish in each tournament to ensure you have your automatic invitation?

Tour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start. Kenny
