Brady Shoots 68-73 to Take Southern Dunes Major
Jeff Stinson shot the lowest round of his life. Dennis Brady shot 68 in the senior Championship flight. But the highlight of the weekend at Southern Dunes came on Sunday morning when Ray Vigeant (pictured above) playing in the final group of the Championship flight, scored a hole in one on the par 3 14th hole. The ace propelled him to the the title in our first "major" of the season. He scored 156 on a pair of 78's to edge past a trio of players two strokes back. Sean Marlowe joined Chad Frank and Bill Shufelt, the past two Players of the Year, in the logjam at 158.
The A flight belonged to Stinson. He opened on Saturday with a solid 82 that put him in the middle of the pack starting Sunday. And he bogeyed his first hole on Sunday. Then the pars came--first four in a row and then a birdie followed by three more pars and another birdie. After a bogey at #5 (his 14th hole of the day) he is even par with 4 holes to play. And he birdies the last hole of the day, the par 5 ninth to shoot a career best 71. A full 4 shots better than any round he has played anywhere. The rally was good enough to surge past the steady Jonathan Stuart who finished alone in second place with rounds of 75-80 for 155 total. After that, it was another 2 strokes back to four players with 157 totals--Marvin Pressley, Joel Adams, Jason Lamertina and Dennis Cargo.
The B flight took advantage of a friendly course set-up. Three players, led by Bill Robertson pulled away from the rest of the field. Sylvester Warren, making his first start of the year, opened with a 78 and led Robertson by a shot after the first round. Veteran Rick Whitman was another stroke back on 80. On Sunday, Bill was able to pass Sly with a second round 78 of his own. Sly held on to second place with an 81 for a 159 total and one stroke better than Whitman's back to back rounds of 80.
In the C flight we welcomed two guests from the Jacksonville tour. And they took our money--with some fine play! Mike Salik was too steady for the rest as he put up scores of 84 and 82 for 166 total to beat Dan Seidenfaden by three. Dan opened with an 81 but his 88 on Sunday could not hold Mike off. Brian Mack made a charge on Sunday with a fine 83 to finish in third at 171. Randolph Hill (also from Jacksonville) fired steady rounds of 89 and 88 to finish in fourth at 177.
Ian Halliwell continued his fine play on tour as he captured the D flight with rounds of 96-89-185. He held off Randy Stephens who opened with a 90 on Saturday and shot 97 Sunday to hold off a fast charging Wayne Weaver and Alberto Esperon. Weaver and Esperon shot 100 and 99 respectively on Saturday but charged up the leaderboard Sunday with scores of 88 and 89 to finish tied for third at 188. Ian has worked his way up to a T3 on the D flight Points List.
Dennis Brady posted the low score of the weekend, a 68 on Saturday to lead the Senior Championship flight. A steady 73 on Sunday led to an easy 6 stroke win over the steady (73-74) Tom Brennan. Steve Maddox shot even par 72 on Sunday and moved into third place at 148. Ed Paterniti and David Welland had to go a 37th hole to decide the Senior A flight. Paterniti prevailed on the first extra hole. Bill Robertson and Rick Whitman, double-dipping in the regular and senior B flights, claimed the top two spots in Senior B flight with 157 and 160, respectively.
Next up are back to back tournaments on May 30 at Victoria Hills and June 6 at Metrowest.
