Jim Gallagher wins back to back Senior Amateur Golf Tour Championship for his third in the past six years!

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Jim Gallagher makes it five championship titles for the Southeast VA tour in the past six years. Gallagher started the roll back in 2011 and since then Ron Sullins, Bryan Layne followed. In both the 2015 and 2016 Senior Amateur Tour National Championship, Gallagher again hoisted the trophy for the Championship Flight.

Gallagher took the lead going into day two as a result of a big gamble on the 18th hole of round one.  After hitting his drive into the water, Gallagher dropped and hit a 5 wood within 2 feet and to make his birdie putt on the par 5.  Gallagher picked up the lead with a great birdie which could have easily been a bogey.  Gallagher finished the championship with rounds of 70-74-144 for the two shot victory.

Dan Anthony pushed Gallagher on day two, pulling to even for the tournament going into the back nine holes.  Gallagher then righted the ship, making birdie on the tenth. When Anthony doubled hole 12, Gallagher went into conservative mode and claimed the victory.

Rich Campbell from Columbus, OH finished solo second with 72-74-146. This concluded a great week for Campbell since he also finished in fifth place overall in the Golfweek National Championship.  Central Carolina’s Dan Anthony finished third at 150 followed by Mark Hodges (Charlotte) also at 150.

In the A flight, Tip Wright (Southeast VA) held a one shot lead after day one over 2 other players.  Wight thanked his putter for his first ever National Championship as he fired 73-73-146 for the three shot victory.  Michael Dion (Orlando) and Michael Mason (Michigan East) both finished at 149.  Todd Soulliere, last year’s winner finished fourth at 151.

Brett Hoffman of Michigan East fired a two day total of 157 to win the B Flight Championship by just two shots.  Joe Soileau (Louisiana) finished second at 159 and Jerry Edwards (Kentucky) was third at 162.  Rick Wigginton (Indiana-Western, KY) and Reggie Livingston (Chicago) both finished at 163.

The C Flight Champion went to Fred Turner of North Central Florida at 171 who played with a heavy heart after the passing of his mother-in-law.  “I made it through a very tough week and can’t believe how blessed I feel about winning”, said Turner.

JJ Henley (Chicago) and Joe Lee (Charlotte) both finished at 174 followed by two Michigan West players as Greg Blanche and Randy Marshall finished at 176.

In the Team Cup, Charlotte took home the cup with a stroke total of 1281 followed by Central Carolina at 1287 and Louisiana with 1302.

Special thanks go out to Palmetto Dunes, the host resort and the staff at the Trent Jones and Arthur Hills courses.  Palmetto Dunes stepped up and provided food and tournament headquarters even in the wake of Hurricane Matthews destruction which caused the closing of all three Palmetto Dunes courses. Thanks also to thanks to Hampton Hall, Hilton Head National and Dolphin Head CC for hosting the 2016 Senior National Championship.
