Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateurs Enjoy 82 Degree Weather At Goodyear Golf Club

Danville, VA--- After a two day rain delay 15 Senior Amateurs from various parts of Virginia and North Carolina came to Goodyear Golf Club to take on the beautiful but challenging course in their 5th tournament of the season.

The Championship Flight saw Keith Myers from Roanoke come from 2 strokes down at the turn to shoot 1 over par on the backside for a single stroke victory over fellow Roanoke competitor Tim Chocklett. Myers used a birdie on number 13 to start his comeback move; finishing with a 78 for his 4th win in 5 tournaments this season. Chocklett finished 2nd with a 79; while John Sutton took 3rd with 88.

The A Flight saw the lowest round of the day in Dick Douthats 75; giving  him his 1st win of the season. Another A Flight player; Jim Gaddy also broke the 80 mark on the challenging wet course shooting 79 for 2nd place. Rounding out the Flight was Dexter Barbee with 80 and Rusty Ward with 82.

After 2nd place finisher Charlie Powell sank a 35ft birdie putt on #18 it looked as if a playoff was in the making; but Mike Helmkamp from Farmville coolly stepped up and sank his 5 ft. birdie putt to seal his 3rd season victory. Where Will You Be in the 2013 Season Ending Point Standings Race?

There are only two ways to get to the year ending National Tournament - win one of the four majors or be one of the Top 10 point earners in your flight.

As you plot your tour schedule, be cognizant of the fact, only the top 10 are guaranteed access. Usually, most flight races are tight and depends on how well you play and of course how many tour dates you participate in during 2013.

Do you know how many tournaments you will need to play and what place you will need to finish in each tournament to ensure you have your automatic invitation?

Rules Review
It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score? Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm. There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to: usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

ONLY WHEN THE FORM OF PLAY IS A FACTOR WILL IT BE STATED

Question from week #160

Brothers Joey and Johnny Grimm are partners in a foursome stroke play competition. They have decided that Joey will tee off on the odd holes. On the fifth hole, Joey has hit their tee ball into the lateral hazard that runs down the left side of the hole.

The partners correctly determine the spot where their tee ball last crossed the margin of the hazard and decide to drop a ball under R26-1c within two club-lengths of that spot, no closer to the hole. Johnny drops a substituted ball within the prescribed area but it starts rolling down the slope towards the hazard. Joey stops the ball with his foot before it can reach the hazard margin, picks it up and tosses it back to Johnny to re-drop. This time the ball moves only about a foot before it comes to rest. Johnny hits this ball onto the green and Joey made the putt.

What did the brothers score on the 5th hole?

a. They did everything correctly and scored a 4.

b. Joey should not have stopped the dropped ball short of the hazard and as a result they are penalized two strokes instead of one. They made 5.

c. Joey should not have stopped the dropped ball short of the hazard and as a result they get an additional 2-stroke penalty under Rule 1-2. They made 6.

d. The brothers had a total of five penalty strokes and scored an 8 on the hole. They may face a possible DQ.

Answer:

The correct answer is “d”. This indeed is a grim situation.

They hit the ball three times and had five penalty strokes (R26-1, R1-2 and Rule 20-7.

The penalty for R26-1 is obvious because they took relief for a ball in a lateral water hazard.

This is foursomes stroke play where the players alternate shots from tee to hole-out. Since it is Johnny’s turn to play next, he must be the one to drop a ball for taking relief under R26-1 which he did correctly. But his brother must not stop the ball before it comes to rest unless it either has crossed the margin of the hazard or has rolled more than two club-lengths and in either case has no reasonable chance of reversing direction ( see Decision 20-c/4). The penalty for prematurely stopping the ball breaches Rule 1-2; a two stroke penalty. In this case the ball must then be placed and played from where it was stopped by Joey’s foot (see Note 2 below the penalty statement for R1-2).

When they failed to replace the ball where it had been stopped by Joey’s foot and instead played their next stroke from a position a few feet away, they breached Rule 20-7, Wrong Place, a second 2-stroke penalty.

Depending on the exact circumstances, the Committee could rule this a serious breach and DQ the brothers Grimm.
