B Flight at Season Opener at Hunting Hills Country Club

Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateur Finally Begins 2nd Season

Roanoke, VA-- After postponing its first two scheduled tournaments due to rain and snow the Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateur tour finally began their 2013 season at Hunting Hills Country Club. A rather small but faithful group took on the cool, windy, early season conditions and while their scores may have been a bit high ; so were their spirits. All had a great time of reunion, fellowship, and competition.

The Championship Flight wasted no time in heating up the competition for the new seasons points race with today’s match having to be decided in a sudden death playoff. Last season’s Champion Keith Myers and fellow Hunting Hills member Tim Chocklett , both from the Roanoke area carded  matching 77’s at the end of regulation play. Chocklett who had 5 birdies today saw his momentum take a turn on the back 9 as the wind began to increase in the afternoon. Both Myers and Chocklett stated that the strong headwind on the #1 hole which was used to break the tie; made the hole almost unreachable in 2. Myers found his way back to the winners circle with a very good par on the hole while Chocklett could do no better than bogie.

In B Flight action Charlie Powell from Danville picked up his 1st place finish by using 2 birdies to distance himself from the field with an 80. Raymond Rice from Hurt finished 2nd with an 84; while Bill Knarr from Verona followed with a 90.

Last season’s C Flight runner-up Bart Truesdell from Huddleston ; calmed his nerves after missing a short putt for a double bogie start to pick up the victory with a 90 for the day. Another Huddleston player Chauncy Drewry took 2nd place in a match of scorecards with Tour Director Kenny Powell from Danville; as both carded 97s.

The Tours next scheduled event is a makeup tournament at Poplar Grove Golf Club in Amherst on April 16th at 10am. The entry fee for this event is $70. Pre-registration and payment should be made by Tuesday April 9,2013. This may be accomplished at www.senioramateurgolftour.net  at the Piedmont Va link or by contacting Kenny Powell at 434-792-3728.

Rules ReviewIt has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score? Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm. There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

ONLY WHEN THE FORM OF PLAY IS A FACTOR WILL IT BE STATED

Question from week #186 Al and his group is searching for his tee ball which was well hit in the direction of a fairway bunker. After a few minutes of searching, a ball was located in a very odd situation. See the photo below:

As it lay inside the rake housing, the ball was identified as his ball. How should Al proceed? A. Al must mark the position of the ball, lift the rake and remove the ball from inside the rake head. He should then place the ball as close as possible to the spot on the grass directly below where it was originally trapped inside the rake. B. Al need not mark the position of the ball. He should lift the rake and remove the ball from inside the rake head. He should then place the ball as close as possible to the spot on the grass directly below where it was originally trapped inside the rake. C. Al must mark the position of the ball, lift the rake and remove the ball from inside the rake head. He should then drop the ball as close as possible to the spot on the grass directly below where it was originally trapped inside the rake. D. Al need not mark the position of the ball. He should lift the rake and remove the ball from inside the rake head. He should then drop the ball as close as possible to the spot on the grass directly below where it was originally trapped inside the rake.
Answer Crazy things can happen along the way to the bar and the Rules cover most of them. The correct answer is D. This photo happens to be taken with a cell phone by the individual whose ball ended up in the position you see, un-staged, actual situation. This opening is much smaller than the hole and to do this you can only approach the rake from a limited angle to achieve this result. These guys are good! Anyway. The rake is a moveable obstruction and the ball is “in or on” the obstruction. This is covered under R24-1b. The Rule does not require the ball to first be marked. It is not a bad idea however, as the player is responsible for dropping on or as near as possible to the spot directly under where Al’s ball sits in the rake. And, yes, Al can clean the ball before dropping.
