Championship Flight at Chatmoss Country Club

Points Race Tightens Up at Chatmoss Country Club Tournament

Martinsville, VA

September 25, 2012

The Senior Amateur Golf Tour of Piedmont Virginia held its 14th tournament of its inaugural season today at beautiful Chatmoss Country Club in near perfect fall weather. Championship flight member Keith Myers from Roanoke used a 4 birdie attack to card a 2 over par 74 and collect his 5th tour victory of the season. With the win Myers was able to close in on Championship flight point’s leader Tim Chocklett; now only trailing Chocklett by 100 points with 3 tournaments left in the season. John Franklin from Danville claimed 2nd place honors with a 77.

The ‘A’  flight saw some very competitive play as Frankie Smith from Lynchburg was able to surge out of an even par tie after 9 holes with a chip in eagle on the par 5 twelfth hole; to collect his 5th win of the season with a daily low score of 73 . The eagle gave Smith a 6 stroke advantage going into his last 5 holes over 2nd place finisher John Maddox from Rustburg; who finished with a 78. The 73 was also Smiths lowest tour score of the year and boosted Smith into the overall tour points standings lead with 4835 points.

‘B’ flight also saw one of its members; Irving Carter from South Boston post his best round of the season with a 3 over par 75. Carter used 4 birdies to separate himself from the crowd for his 2nd win of the season. 8 strokes behind at 83 was Bill Knarr from Verona who claimed the 2nd place finish.

Tim Stirling from Huddleston made it 3 in a row and 7 for the season by collecting another 1st place finish in the C flight. Stirling carded an 84 for the win which gave him the distinction of having more victories than anyone else on the Tour. The points earned by the finish also propelled him into 2nd place in overall Tour points with 4,675 points; only 160 behind Tour points leader Frankie Smith of the A flight. Walt Renton from Crossville, TN four strokes back at 88 once again fell into 2nd place behind Stirling for the 3rd time this season.

The Tours next tournament will be their 4th and final MAJOR of the season with automatic qualification to National Finals and double points up for grabs. It will be held at The Keswick Club on Tuesday, October 9th at 10:00am. The cost is $70 entry fee for Tour members. Registration deadline is Tuesday, October 2nd. Only 3 more tournaments before National Finals at Pinehurst, NC in November.
