Danville Golf Club Draws Record Field

Danville, VA

September 10, 2012

The Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateur Golf Tour experienced its largest participant field of its inaugural season today at Danville Golf Club. 37 players came from various parts of Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee to experience the challenge of the Tour and beauty of this course. One of the participants; Charles Smith from the Raleigh/Pinehurst Tour made the journey to refresh his memories of the Danville layout. Some 40 or so years ago he had worked at the Danville Golf Club as a caddy but never had the opportunity to play there; so when he saw it on the Tour schedule he eagerly signed up to finally get to play the grounds he had many times helped others play. In all 12 players came up from North Carolina to participate in the tournament.

The Championship flight saw John Franklin from Danville continue his winning ways by shooting a one over par 71 to capture his 2nd season victory on the Tour. It was however also Franklins 2nd Championship flight victory of the same weekend at the Danville course. Franklins team also took 1st place honors here this Friday and Saturday at the Danville Golf Club Member/Guest tournament. Rick Walker from North Carolina claimed 2nd place with a match of cards with a 76. Third and fourth places went to Kevin Kiser from Danville and Keith Myers from Roanoke who both also carded 76s.

In the A flight Frankie Smith from Lynchburg was able to hold off a strong effort by Triad Golf Today editor Steve Williams by a mire stroke to collect his 4th Tour victory with a 75. Williams; who brought with him a group of North Carolina guest finished 2nd with a 76. Rounding out the A flights top 4 finishers was Jim Gaddy from Lynchburg carding a 77 and another North Carolina guest James Floyd with a 78.

Sam Moser from South Boston bounced back from his sudden death2nd place finish last tournament to pick up his 2nd Tour victory of the season. Moser used a 4 birdie attack for the 3 stroke victory margin ; carding a 75. Charlie Snipes from Keswick finished 2nd with a 78; while Raymond Rice from Hurt took 3rd with his 79.

C flight was once again led by flight points leader Tim Stirling from Huddleston who collected his 6th victory of the season with his 83. Only a stroke away at 84 was Walt Renton from Crossville, Tennessee. Dan Morgan from Danville took 3rd place finishing with an 87.

The Tours next tournament will be held at Chatmoss Country Club in Martinsville, Tuesday September 25, 2012 with a 10:00 am shotgun start.
