Scores Heat up Forcing Sudden Death Shoot-outs in 2 of 4 Flights in Senior Am

Draper, VA

June 27, 2012

As the temperature began to heat up again today so did the competition in the Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateur Golf Tour Tournament held at Draper Valley Golf Club. It began in the Championship Flight with Keith Myers of Roanoke picking up his 4th victory of the season but not without a fight. Local resident John Sutton of Pilot used his knowledge of the course to tie Myers regulation score of 74 to force a play-off. They began the shootout on Hole #1; a 491yd par 5 which long hitting Myers birdied for the win. It was Myers 3rd birdie of the day.

The A Flight also saw a repeat winner today as Jim Gaddy of Lynchburg collected his 2nd victory in a row with a round of 75. In 2nd place was new Tour member John Maddox from Rustburg; playing in his first tournament finishing with an 83.

B Flight was not to be decided until the last hole as all 9 participants of the flight only saw a 6 point scoring differential from top to bottom. Charlie Snipes playing from Keswick finished with birdie-par-par to record his best score of his 7 tournaments this season; with his 1st place 79. Only 1 stroke behind him was 2nd place finisher Raymond Rice of Hurt with an 80. Three players tied with 81’s, an 82, an 84, and two 85’s rounded out the flights scoring.

The C Flight only had 4 participants today; but 3 of the 4 finished tied for 1st place with 83’s forcing still another playoff. This time it was a 3 way sudden death matchup headed for Hole # 1. Just as in the Championship flight playoff; the playoff ended with a birdie on the 1st hole. It too was the 3rd of the day for David Davis of Martinsville. This also gave Davis his third win of the season. Another new member; Danny Wright of Big Island; playing in his first event finished 2nd. Walt Renton of Crossville, Tenn. playing in just his 2nd Tour tournament; took 3rd place. It was Renton’s second sudden death playoff in as many tournaments; both of which his efforts fell just short.

Piedmont Virginia’s next tournament will be its 2nd MAJOR  Tournament of the season with double points and automatic qualification to National Finals up for grabs. It will be held at the Manor Resort in Farmville on Tuesday, July 10,2012 at 10:00am. Entry fee is $65 with pre-registration required by July 3rd.
