Olde Mill Golf Resort Proved to be quite a Challange for Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateurs

Laurel Fork, Va.

June 5, 2012

Temperatures were not the only thing cool today as scores rose above normal in Senior Amateur Tour action played at Olde Mill Resort. Putters seemed quite cool also today; as only 4 players were able to break the 80 mark.

In Championship action the duo who recently advanced into the flight continued their rivalry and domination of this flight also; as Phillip Clay of Evington broke Keith Myers of Roanoke ‘s 3 tournament winning streak.  Clay carded a 2 over par 74 with the help of 2 birdies; while Myers ended the day with a 76. John Sutton of Pilot finished 3rd with a 77.

No players in the A flight were able to find their way into the 70’s today with Jim Gaddy of Lynchburg leading the flight with a 81. Kevin Kiser of Danville finished one stroke short with an 82 for 2nd place. Raymond Newman also from Danville finished 3rd with a 84.

Wayne Crupi of Alexandria shot 2 under par 33 on the back nine to give him his 2nd first place finish of the season in the B Flight with a 77. Last weeks winner Raymond Rice of Hurt finished 3 strokes back with a 80 and rookie tour member Irving Carter of Virgilina playing in just his 2nd tournament finished 3rd with a 82.

Competition heated up in the C flight as Tim Stirling of Huddleston had to hang on to a bogey 6 on the first hole of a sudden death playoff to ward off a visiting tour member; Walt Renton of Crossville, Tennessee. Both players finished their rounds with 87’s before heading off to the par 5 first hole. Both players struggled to reach the hole ; but after Renton’s shot found the water; Stirling was able to hold on to the bogey for a one stroke playoff victory. It was Stirling’s 3rd victory of the season keeping him close in points standings.
