Participants Slosh to Record Rounds at London Downs

17 Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateur Tour Members Slosh thru Rain Soaked Beautiful Fairways of London Downs Golf Club

Forest, VA.

Rain soaked both course and participants but failed to dampen spirits or scores at London Downs Golf Club; Monday May 14th. Although only about ½ of expected field came out to test their skills against Mother Nature’s added challenge; the day proved very entertaining as all 4 flights’s had very fierce competition.

The Championship Flight was led by Tim Chocklett of Vinton; who used a 2 birdie attack to finish with a 1-under par 71. It took his birdie on #18 to give him the one stroke victory over Terry Towler who finished with an even par 72. All 6 participants in this flight finished with scores of 78 or better.

A Flight saw Keith Myers of Roanoke capture his second 1st Place finish in a row with a 2-under par 70. This was also the lowest score recorded on the Tour this season through its first 5 tournaments. Keith; one of the Tour’s youngest members carded 6 birdies in route to this record round. Jim Gaddy with 76 and Frankie Smith’s 77; both from Lynchburg rounded out the flight.

In B Flight Action Charlie Powell of Danville also kept his hot streak going with his 3rd tournament victory in a row. Charlie carded an 81; bettering his 2 closest competitors by 5 strokes. Bill Knarr of Verona and Sammie Moser of South Boston both tied for 2nd with 86’s.

Rounding out the field of the day in C Flight action; Bart Truesdell of Huddleston made a 4 stroke comeback on his back nine to edge out second place finisher Tim Stirling; also of Huddleston by a single stroke . Bart carded 95 while Tim finished with a 96 after leading 45 to Bart’s 49 at the turn. Tour Director Kenny Powell finished 3rd with a 97.

The next scheduled event is the 1st of the 4 Major Tournaments on the 2012 schedule. In these Major’s flight winners will win automatic qualification to the Season ending National Finals held at Pinehurst,N.C. in November. All participants earn double tour points also at these events. This Major will be held at Stoney Creek at Wintergreen Resort; May 22 at 10:00am. Cost is $70. Sign-up ASAP
