Championship Flight Action

Tour has it's First Sudden Death Playoff at Goodyear Golf Club

Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateur Tour has its First Sudden Death Play-off Finish

Danville, Virginia- A three player tie for first place in the Championship Flight went 2 extra holes to decide the winner today at Goodyear Golf Club. After carding 76’s in regulation play; Barry Shea of Danville, Terry Towler of Dillwyn; and Dick Douthat of Forest all headed back out to the course to settle who would get the first place finish. Barry Shea conceded his attempt at hole #1; when Terry Towler sank a 20’ birdie putt and was immediately followed by the 7’ birdie by Douthat. It was the third birdie of the day for Towler; but was Douthat’s first. Douthat stated that his 7 footer got very large after watching the 20’ + shot by Towler. The pressure intensified on the 186yd par 3 second hole . Douthat drove his ball on the green as Towler’s landed in the sand trap. Towler’s second shot flew over the green; forcing him to chip on with his third shot. Douthat 3 putted the difficult green for a bogey 4; leaving Towler a chance to tie once more with a one putt. But it was not to be; Towler 2 putted giving Douthat his first win of the season.

In A Flight action Keith Myers of Roanoke used 3 birdies to separate himself from the pack carding a 76 to take first place honors by 2 strokes over Frankie Smith of Lynchburg. Also staying in the 70’s with a 79 was Raymond Newman of Danville.

The B and C Flight’s both had repeat winners from last week’s Tournament. Charlie Powell ; who calls both Tuscarora and Goodyear his home courses; used his course knowledge to record a 78 for his second first place finish in a row in the B Flight. While not having home course knowledge as Powell did; D flight winner Tim Stirling of Huddleston made it 2 in a row with his 85 . Tim has his sights set on taking the season points lead as well as preparing for the Nationals.

Closest to the pin winners were:

Championship Flight=Phillip Clay-Evington;  A Flight= Jim Gaddy-Lynchburg; B Flight= Charlie Snipes-Keswick; C Flight= Robbie Jones-Chesapeake
