Tour members experience Virginia Mountain Golf at Olde Mill Resort and Low Country at Emporia Country Club

Tuesday June 3, 2014

Laurel Fork, VA

19 Senior Amateur Tour golfers gathered atop Groundhog Mountain Tuesday morning to experience Virginia mountain golf at its best at the Olde Mill Resort. It was the 6th tournament of the season for the Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateur Golf Tour. The challenging course only gave up 17 birdies for the day as only 4 players were able to record rounds less than 80.

The Championship Flight had 4 competitors taking aim at the top spot. John Franklin from Danville playing in his 1st tour appearance of the season was able to hold off last season’s champion Keith Myers from Roanoke by a single stoke with a par on their final hole as Myers carded a bogie. Franklin turned in a 77 for 1st place; with Myers claiming 2nd with a 78.

A Flight had 3 visiting players from North Carolina Tours to compete with Rusty Ward and Raymond Newman from the Virginia Tour. Steve Cummings; a Triad North Carolina Tour member turned in his best round of the year using 3 birdies to shoot a 78 for 1st place. Three players were tied at 85 for 2nd place but Raymond Newman from Danville claimed the 2nd place spot on a match of cards with Richard Boone from Charlotte, NC and Rusty Ward from N. Prince George, VA.

The B Flight saw last season’s Tour Points Champion Bill Knarr from Verona turn in the low round of the day; at 76. Knarr had played a practice round the day before and only managed an 86. It was a very welcomed turnaround. In second place in B Flight was Robert Agee from Danville with an 83 finish in his 1st tournament of the season.

George Pearce from Norfolk proved that Tidewater area players can also play mountain courses in the C Flight as he shot an 86 for a 7 stroke win over 2nd place David Davis; the current National Champion from Martinsville. Davis finished with a 93.

Closest to the flag prizes were won by Rodney Wilson on # 8 and George Russell on # 14.

June 9, 2014

Emporia, VA

16 Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateur Tour members gathered at Emporia Country Club today for their 7th tournament of the 2014 season. The 79 year old Country Club proved to be still quite a challenge as it only gave up two rounds in the 70’s and 13 birdies to the field. Both of the rounds in the 70’s belonged to Tour members who were also Emporia members playing their par 71 home course.

There were no Championship Flight contestants present today but Rusty Ward from N. Prince George carded 2 birdies in route to an 80 for his 4th victory in 7 starts this season. The points earned with the win keeps Rusty comfortably in the lead of the Tours season points race also. Doug Brandmahl from Manakin Sabot also carded 2 birdies today came in 2nd in the A Flight with an 83.

B Flight saw locals Larry Maitland and Jerry Delbridge battle for the top spot with Maitland from Stony Creek coming out on top by a stroke. Both players had one previous win this season coming into their home course tournament today. Maitland had two birdies on the front nine and one more on the backside to give him a three over par 74. Delbridge had only one birdie on each side leaving him a single stroke behind Maitland at 75 for 2nd place.

The C Flight saw Tour Director Kenny Powell hang on for his 2nd win of the season by holding off last tournaments winner George Pearce from Norfolk and current National Champion David Davis from Martinsville as they both trailed at the turn by 2 and 1 respectively. Powell who made the turn at 41 found himself trailing Davis by 2 with 4 holes to go. Davis then fell victim to a double and triple bogie on the last two holes as Powell was able to par and double bogie in. Meanwhile Pearce ; who was in the foursome behind Davis and Powell had mounted a backside charge which fell a single stroke short . Powell finished with an 86 with Pearce 2nd with 87 and Davis 3rd with 88.

The Tour takes a couple of weeks off for the US Opens before returning to action at Brickshire Golf Club in Providence Forge on Tuesday June 24th at 10am. Registration is required by June 17th. Please email Kenny Powell at piedmontva@senioramateurgolftour.net or call 434-792-3728 to register.

Rules Review

It has been suggested that there should be a series of Rules scenarios for you to solve. So begins a series of problems titled What's the Score?

Doc Miller has graciously agreed to allow me to share these with you that he has been sending since July 2009.

I will include one each week. You should try to determine the answer based upon your knowledge of the Rules when ever possible and then use your Rule book to confirm.

There will be no trick questions or hidden information.

If you do not have a Rules of Golf book handy, go to:usga.org/Rule-Books and-Decisions

===============================================================

Question ? A removed flagstick placed on the ground is subsequently lifted?

A, the opponent or fellow -competitor of B, removes the flagstick from the hole and places it on the ground.B then putts and A, who is standing within reach of the removed flagstick , realizes that B's ball might strike the removed flagstick, so he picks the flagstick up. What is the ruling?

Answer: There is no penality. Rule 24-1 states that when a ball is in motion , an obstruction that might influence the movement of the ball , other than equipment of any player or the flagstick when attended, removed, or held up , must not be moved. Therefore the flagstick and/ or equipment  may be moved to avoid contact by the struck ball.

Where Will You Be in the 2014 Season Ending Point Standings Race?

There are only two ways to get to the year ending National Tournament - win one of the four majors or be one of the Top 15 point earners in your flight.

As you plot your tour schedule, be cognizant of the fact, only the top 15 are guaranteed access. Usually, most flight races are tight and depends on how well you play and of course how many tour dates you participate in during 2014.

Do you know how many tournaments you will need to play and what place you will need to finish in each tournament to ensure you have your automatic invitation?

Tour Weather Guidelines

Primarily, we adhere to the same guidelines that the PGA Tour uses: If Primarily, the course is open, we're going to play.

The only exception to this is that I'll never put any of you in harm's way during an event because of dangerous weather. (i.e. - lightening or severe cold and wetness).

In other words, I won't let the course "bully" us into playing where an unsafe condition might exist.

Because I arrive at every event at least two hours prior to the start time and I generally have to leave my house at least an hour before that to get to the course, there is no sense calling me just before the event, because I won't be at the office. The best avenue to take is to call the course if the weather seems threatening.

If you are on the roster for the event, and you do not get a cancellation notice from the course after calling them, you are expected to show up in time for the scheduled shotgun start. Kenny
