CAROLINA TRACE PROVES TOUGH TEST FOR SENIOR AM TOUR
Posted: 8/16/2013 11:04:51 AM

Sanford, NC  (August 15, 2013)  -  Sunny temperatures in the low 70s and a golf course in great shape greeted Senior Amateur Tour members who teed it up at Carolina Trace Country Club - The Lake Course today.  Despite these ideal conditions, and a recent spate of record low scores registered "on-Tour" in past weeks, modest scores were the norm for the day across the board in all 4 Flights contested.

Nowhere was it more evident than in the B Flight.  Normally 1 or 2 members of the flight will break 80 in a given event.  Not one player bettered 85 in the flight as 3 participants posted that score exactly.  Smithfield's Randy Robbins needed 3 holes to finish the sudden death playoff that occurs after any 1st-place tie "on-Tour".  Pittsboro's Glenn Wright and Raleigh's Darrell Hagwood came in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Only 2 players managed to break 90 in the C Flight - Raleigh's Jim Tesch, with an 87, and Brian Costine of Durham with an 89.  The remaining 29 flight members shot 92 or higher.  In the A Flight, Madison's Wilson Shelton and Jim Shermer of Lewisville were the only 2 participants to break 80 with a 76 and 78 respectively.

While only 3 strokes separated the top 4 players in the Championship Flight, it was Cary's Johnny Adams who walked away with the 1st place prize.  Adams was 1 shot clear of Winston-Salem's Howard Nemenz.

"The greens were running at PGA Tour speeds", noted Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck.  "That, despite the fact that the tee boxes were fairly short by Tour standards was probably the biggest reason scores were modest".

Next up for the Senior Amateur Golf Tour on August 22, is the season's final Major event at Anderson Creek, also in Sanford.  That event is very close to a sell-out right now, with just a few spots remaining available on the roster.  Contact Hallenbeck if interested in participating.
