SENIOR TOUR SCORES SOAR ON THE WIND AT CROSS CREEK
Posted: 4/24/2009 9:34:07 AM
Mount Airy, NC (April 23, 2009) - The wind swirled constantly, gusting to over 30 mph at Cross Creek Country Club during the Harris Teeter Senior Amateur Tour event held here today. Although the fairways and greens were in excellent condition, scores skyrocketed across the board in all 4 Flights due to the windy conditions. Only 2 golfers managed to break 80 in the entire event on the 6,175 yard, par 72 course - Raleigh's Bill Rockenstein in the Championship Flight with a 75, and Doug Masters of Clemmons in the A Flight with a 78. Rockenstein enjoyed a 5-stroke margin of victory over 2 Tour members - Yadkinville's Tom Fagerli and George Tsiolkas of Winston-Salem. Masters' edge over 2nd place finisher John Lyda of Advance was 3-strokes. Ordinarily there would have been a playoff for 1st place in the B Flight, where Fayetteville's David Teal and John Ashby of Galax both finished atop the flight with 83s, but Ashby declared "No more golf for me today - I've had enough of this wind". By doing so he relinquished 1st place to Teal along with the $170 gift certificate. Not one golfer in the C Flight was able to break 90 in today's event, but that didn't mean that there was no excitement in the finish as Raleigh's Gary Ransom nipped Danny Keever of High Point by a single stroke - 91 to 92. "Even with the rough scoring, our guys had a good time on a great golf course", stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "We're coming back here next year, and I predict somebody's gonna tame this beast" Any amateur golfer over 50 interested in the Harris Teeter Tour can contact Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556, or email him at behgolf@aol.com for information on how to play in an event "on-Tour".
