RALEIGH AREA PLAYERS DOMINATE SENIOR TOUR EVENT
Posted: 7/24/2011 1:10:56 PM
Fuquay-Varina, NC  (July 21, 2011)  -  Bentwinds Country Club was the scene of today's Senior Amateur Golf Tour event for the Raleigh and Triad Tours.  The leaderboards in all 4 Flights were dominated by local players starting with the A Flight.

Zebulon's Dale Casey turned in the low round of the event in any flight with an even-par 72 to top the A group.  He needed every good shot he hit as Raleigh's Brent Massey finished only 1-back at 73.  Gus Alford, who also hails from Zebulon, took 3rd with a 77.

In the B Flight, Jerry Widdowson of Durham continued his hot play of late with a 75 to secure a relatively comfortable 5 stroke advantage over two Tour members - Raleigh's Doug Shank and Durham's Twig Avent.

Benny Miller of Raleigh edged Greensboro's Mike Hunter for the top spot in the C Flight - 85 to 87.  Hunter was the only Triad Tour member to break the top 3 in any of the 4 flights.  Raleigh's Jim Stanley stood alone in 3rd with an even 90.

The big boys in the Championship Flight played from about 400 yards farther back than did the other 3 flights, but acquitted themselves nicely despite the tougher conditions.  Pinehurst's Rick Luzar walked away with the title with a 73 - 2 shots clear of Cary's Steve Linton and another Pinehurst member, Chuck Taubersmith.

The next Senior Amateur Golf Tour event will be held at Devils Ridge Country Club in Holly Springs.  Any senior (over 50) amateur interested in information about playing in that (or any other) Senior Tour event, can contact Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556.
