STURDIVANT'S 2-UNDER WINS SR TOUR EVENT
Posted: 6/6/2010 2:17:40 PM
Seven Lakes, NC (June 3, 2010) - Sanford's Craig Sturdivant used a backside 34, highlighted by birdies on 3 consecutive holes to help him fashion a 2-under 70 at Seven Lakes Country Club here Thursday. Sturdivant finished 3-strokes clear of Pinehurst's Rick Luzar to take top honors in the Championship Flight of the Senior Amateur Golf Tour. After missing the first 8 events of the season, Sturdivant has steadily moved up the leaderboard in Tour Points Standings and stands alone in 6th place. In addition to that, his 1.4 Tour Handicap is the 3rd lowest among Pinehurst Tour Championship Flight members of the Senior Tour. Tour rookie Charles Smith of Greensboro, playing in his very first Tour event, came away with a victory in the A Flight after posting a 77 that included an eagle-3 on the 495 yard, par-5, 1st hole. Normally he would have had to go back on the course to settle 1st place in a sudden death playoff with Winston-Salem's Mark Robinson, who also posted a regulation 77, but Robinson had left the course, leaving Smith to take the top spot. One golfer, Randleman's Fred Dodge, managed to break 80 in the B Flight, and he did so by the narrowest of margins with a 79. He edged out a pair of Durham Tour members by that single stroke, as both Jack Reaume and Ed Lothes shot 80s. In C Flight action, Raleigh's Jim Stanley also enjoyed a 1-stroke margin of victory as his 84 edged Whitsett's Earl Roe. The two Tour veterans both posted one of their lowest scores over the last few seasons. Anyone interested in information about playing in a Senior Tour event, which is open to any amateur golfer over the age of 50, can call Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556, or by emailing him at behgolf@aol.com.
