ONE STROKE (OR LESS) WINS ALL 4 FLIGHTS ON SR AMATEUR TOUR

Mount Airy, NC (April 22, 2010) - If you like down-to-the-wire, last-minute, close finishes, you would have enjoyed the Senior Amateur Golf Tour event held at Cross Creek Country Club today. In all four flights contested in the tournament, the winner was decided by 1-stroke or less. The "less" occurred in the A Flight, where Cross Creek member Earl Varney lost in a sudden-death playoff to Gibsonville's Turner Church after both had turned in regulation 77s over the original 18-hole event. Varney, a Mount Airy resident, and Church were very accommodating to each other in the playoff, as they both found the water on their first playoff hole. Church was able to make the better recovery and walked away with the flight win. Lewisville's Mike Smith, who seems to "cash" every week "on-Tour", edged Terry Collins of Pinehurst 75 to 76 to grab top honors in the Championship Flight. "I was jet-lagged" joked Collins, who recently returned from the Far East. Two very strong scores were turned in by B Flight members Marshall Wolfe of Clemmons and Greensboro's Travis Jones with a 78 and 79 respectively. While waiting for Wolfe's group to turn in their card, Jones declared "I'll bet that Marshall is gonna break 80". His prediction was accurate. Cart mates Tony Johnson of Greensboro and Mayodan's Petey King had a head-to-head showdown in their C Flight group with Johnson nipping King by 1 stroke - 83 to 84. "Those were two darn good C Flight scores on this course", stated Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "I know I'll be checking some Tour Handicaps this week to see if some 'promotions' aren't in order". For information on playing in a Senior Amateur Tour event, open to any amateur golfer over 50, call Hallenbeck at 336-495-6556, or email him at behgolf@aol.com.
