"A" FLIGHTER GOES SUB-PAR IN HARRIS TEETER EVENT
Posted: 8/21/2009 10:44:34 AM
Advance, NC (August 20, 2009) - Burlington's Pete Crook registered 3 consecutive birdies to go along with 6 pars on his back-nine holes in the Harris Teeter Senior Amateur Tour event held at Oak Valley Golf Club today. That 33 on the "back" helped him to an overall 1-under 71 for the day on the 6,490 yard track - the lowest score not only in his A Flight, but in the tournament overall - including the Championship Flight. Cary's Michael Kang was 2 strokes back in 2nd. "There have been events in the past where the A Flight winner equaled, or even went lower than the Championship Flight scores, but that invariably has been due to the fact they normally hit from shorter tees. Such was not the case today as both the Championship and A Flights went from the same Blue Tees", said Tour Director Bruce Hallenbeck. "It was a heckuva score for Pete". As for the Championship Flight, it was topped by Greensboro's Randy Coppedge, playing in his first event since moving up to Championship from the A Flight. Coppedge's 74 gave him a 1-stroke margin over Ridgeway, VA's Bill Wilson and Mike Smith of Lewisville. Advance's Dawson Strider captured his second win of the season, being the only golfer in the B Flight to break 80 as he posted a 78. He was 2 strokes clear of a trio of players - Greensboro's Terry Dearman, Norlina's Sonny Peoples, and Charlotte's Joe Redmond. The C Flight saw the high drama of a sudden death playoff kind of "fizzle-out", as Advance's Ron Alligood hit his first 2 tee shots into a pond guarding the right side of the 10th fairway - their first playoff hole - to effectively hand over the win to Archdale's Elby Hatfield. Both had carded regulation rounds of 86.
